Brie Donning replied to the topic G. A. Henty in the forum Story Analysis 8 years, 1 month ago
I’ve read a number of Henty stories, not sure how many, and I’ve listened to two of the Audio adventures.
One thing I’ve heard and observed a little myself is that Henty wasn’t the best with subtext, and the Audio Adventures are thematically stronger. They definitely do a good job of shortening the stories and tightening the plot. I do still love…[Read more]

Theme Mastery is great. I got most of the way through it sometime last year, but didn’t quite finish it. I was doing it with my brother who is at a lower writing level and he was getting stuck on the homework.
Now I’m doing it alone, and it has helped me figure out what the story is doing on the levels of character motivations…[Read more]

@wordsmith I was mostly just sharing what I’m doing. I know what I need to do to push through. Work on one until it is at a stage where I can put it out for feedback.
Thanks for the tip about subscribing to everything. I’ll do that.
@brandon-miller I like to think I have my projects reasonable well sorted. I know which ones are priorities now,…[Read more]

So, I’m in Rillumen. First I’m excited because I found myself in a guild. Second, I love the name. It flows like the stream its name speaks of. Third, this is the guild Jane said was good. And though she’s not here anymore, I’m inclined to think it’s still going to be good.
Now what do I do in a guild other than talk to myself, I suppose I can do…[Read more]

Brie Donning replied to the topic What does INTP or INJF stand for in the forum General Writing Discussions 8 years, 1 month ago
@Emma-Starr That sounds very much like an ENFP. We can be rather quiet if we’re around people we don’t know. The more comfortable we are, the more random and bubbly we get.
But I think our comfort circle is a bit bigger than an INFJ’s, and I at least love to make make it bigger. I don’t want to ne locked inside my quiet side as much as I am.

@snapper No need for lots of languages. I only meant to do three or so, but I got a little carried away. Words are such nice things.

I prefer looking at the MBTI from the standpoint of cognitive functions. Which a a little confusing, but I can give a hopefully simple explanation. Not perfectly accurate,
I’m an ENFP.
Which means I have Externally directed iNtution, and intwardly directed Feeling. And outwardly directed thinking after that, ending with internally directed…[Read more]

Brie Donning replied to the topic What does it look like for God to be alive in your story? in the forum Themes 8 years, 1 month ago
Good question. I really like what @daeus said here.
There’s that, there’s a sense of purpose, of a world that’s wrong and needs to be made right, and there’s a moral divide.
I once read a fantasy novel by a Christian author that just didn’t have that. There was a hero who was fighting against an evil mage, but he was angry, destructive, and…[Read more]

@Jane-maree Thanks for letting me know.
The guild names all sound awesome.

@daeus I signed up for a guild last week, and don’t seem to have been assigned to one.

I don’t know much about drawing, but the hair on your second picture looks pretty realistic to me.
The second less so, but I still like it. I figure curls are harder to make natural looking.

@Northerner I don’t remember the title either. I’ve read (or listened to) all of The Innocence of Father Brown and part of The Wisdom of Father Brown.

@mariposa It’s green wool and fairly long with a flare at the bottom, and a big hood at the top. I’m putting toggles on it like a duffle coat, but it’s really not shaped like a duffle coat.

Brie Donning replied to the topic Eragon in the forum General Writing Discussions 8 years, 1 month ago
I’ve not read Eragon, but I remember hearing somewhere that both it and Star Wars conform very closely to the Campbellian Monomyth (Which I think is the hero’s journey, but not 100% sure), and that is why they are so similar. They’re very archetypal.

Welcome @northerner!
Chesterton! have you actually read the essay that quote is from? I know I’d seen the quote a couple of times before I read Alarms and Discursions. (It’s somewhere in that collection)

@sarah-narnathron I did only just get here.
@mariposa I sew a lot of skirts, and I’ve done some blouses and dresses, and I’m currently finishing up a coat. It’s one of the most complicated thing I’ve sewn, but it’s turning out all right. Though I occasionally make things that don’t work, or really don’t suit me, I seem to have the knack.
So, I’d…[Read more]

@dekreel No, I’m not Jane’s sister, though she does have a sister who writes.
When I say Clocktech, I do basically mean steampunk, but it’s got a little less steam, and considerably less of the Victorian era. Inspired more by late renaissance Italy, and maritime city states. Lots of intrigue and political machinations. Not too much though,…[Read more]

Hello everyone,
I’m excited to be here. Some of you may remember me from Kingdom Pen where I used the name Anna Brie. And some of you know me from else where too. Hi @jane-maree.
I’m writing a whole mix of fantasy, kingdom adventure, fairy-tale retellings, clock-tech and something I haven’t figured out the genre label for. None of it is…[Read more]
