Abrielle started the topic Short story in the forum Fantasy Writers 2 years, 9 months ago
Hi guys! I recently finished a short story (though it is technically a little long for a ‘short story’). I was wondering, would anybody be willing to give me feedback on it? If your willing to read it but don’t have time for in-depth criticism, my big question is, is it worth turning into a full length novel?
Well, here goes.

Also, sorry. I noticed we had a theme going for the fashion show and I totally ruined it. Apologies.

No problem! I just got back from a summer camp, so I’ve not had a whole lot of time either. What all are you up to this summer?
Also, Rhianna’s speech was great. It was spot on.
Mara seems like fun. She and Rhianna should get along great (rather, they won’t, but it’ll be great anyways🙃).

I use Startpage.com for research just because it’s private.
One note: when working with fantasy or sci-fi you can speed up the healing process via herbs like athelas in Lord of the Rings or via tech. You also have liberty to make up diceases like the Black Breath also from Lord of the Rings (though it’s more of an effect like stress which has…[Read more]

So I’ve got a problem, I like to plan out stories like crazy and many of them I will never write down but will just be added to my mind’s archives. One of theses stories will be the death of Grathmere, my hidden Antag for Guardian Angels and the following 3 books (What can I say? I wanted a complete story). The problem is, after he is defeated by…[Read more]

Hi RAE! I have returned. I shall now proceed to pepper you with suggestions good, bad, and downright awesome. (Teasing. I promise I don’t actually talk like this in real life.)
Anyways, about Grathmere. There’s always the standard ‘badguy turns good, saves goodguy, and dies’ trope. However, I’m not sure that this trope would really make much of a…[Read more]-
Grathmere is a hard character to read. He’s a Wondian Nameless Thing making a little harder for me to put on my Character Cloak. He has never tried to kill Leahae, and she didn’t even know he was such a monster until he was defeated for a while my Alpha and the other Assassin Clones. He has almost killed Alpha more than once, on purpose, but I…[Read more]

My mom thinks a prophet should show up at the final duel and preach forgiveness. Or all three should die.
Anyways… So, did Grathmere accidently give Alpha the disease or was that on purpose? I get that Leahae is a sweet person and all, but if her brother kills Grathmere when she was just beginning to get to know him, it would probably cause…[Read more]-
It’s a tough one. I like the prophet idea but getting one…hard. I also can’t see Alpha breaking down and crying, neither can I see Grathmere. All three…that would spiral into chaos for a Realn clan and a entire kingdom Leahae rules.
On purpose. It does not last forever but when he’s under the effects, he’s helpless. It can. Last hours or…[Read more]

Alpha doesn’t really have to break down and cry. Neither does Grathmere. They just both need to decide that it’s not a good idea to kill each other right now. That doesn’t mean the relationship is going to be completely healed on the spot, but it can at least open the way for it to begin.
Yeah, that last idea works. But if you don’t like it . . .…[Read more]

I haven’t done this sort of thing myself, but I know @calidris has done some stuff with a twenties style setting. Calidris, what sort of resources have you used?

Hi Rae! Igua sounds like an interesting character. Random thing, but I’m very curious about the aversion to butterknives. Has he got some kind of tragic history involving them?
Also, about him and Skullcrusher, could you throw them into a bit of trouble together? Make them learn each other’s languages under stress and by necessity, if that makes…[Read more]-
Igua does have a tragic past as Nahim does, his father was a Cloak but his mother grew up and raised him in a little town where he got his strange accent and his awful habit of slang. When they get into full swing it’s called another language but hey! It’s faster to say stuff. His mother supported her husband but never became a Cloak. When his f…[Read more]

Rants are welcome! Hey, your plot sounds good! I have a habit of coming up with a million characters, half a dozen story lines, and then trying to smoosh it all together. You can probably guess that it doesn’t work great. For example, my novel work in progress (though I have a short story I have to finish first):
A. Rhianna, the Loki, is an…[Read more]-
That is comforting that rants are welcome because (beware) Ru Eis has a lot of rants she can cast forth.
Your story sounds intriguing. I’m curious who these people are and their backstories.

HA thank you for mentioning backstories, I just realized that literally only two of those characters have them. This is still a relatively new story. Also, I made a conscious effort not to make sad characters, who are the ones that really need those. Something to work on!

They’re great Inkhorn! I like. However, Rhianna would be lying through her teeth about it being the best dream ever. She’s not been in it long enough for it to take that prize. You probably noticed that she isn’t averse to telling whopping fibs though, so it’s completely in character.
