“Daddy?” Leana gasped at Nithel’s tone, looking at him in shock.
“You don’t know anything about survival…” Nathair whispered, and thoughts raced behind his eyes.
You don’t know my story. Nithel’s heart pulsed with anger, but at his next thought it turned to pain. But I don’t know yours, either.
“Exactly how much do you ‘want what’s best for Alessio’” Nathair challenged softly. “So many people claim that, but kind people aren’t very willing to go that far. Kind people only give enough kindness and love to make you hope, before they realize you’re too much to handle and throw you away. Or find someone more important and forget about you.”
You truly believe everything you’ve said. The sorrow overcame the anger. Who hurt you, Nathair?
“We’re weapons now, you get that? You don’t know how to do anything else!”
I know what it is to be a weapon. I know what it is for my son to be made a weapon. I hate it.
“I’m just telling you what you don’t have the guts to accept now. I haven’t lied once here,” He looked at the fiery human lie-detector, “have I, Alessio?”
Nithel ignored yelling in the background.
Nathair glared at Nithel. “If you care for him at all you’ll do him the courtesy of not leaving him to think you’ll stay.”
Nithel pressed his lips together, and his eyes sadden.
“He never promised he’d stay…” Leana whispered, and glanced to Nithel, eyes sad. “He never promised to come back… But always promised he’d try…”
Nithel struggled not to cry, but tears leaked out and over, anyway.
Nathair vanished, and Leana clutched his arm.
Nithel found him, tried to meet his eyes. “I’m sorry…” Softly. “I shouldn’t have shouted at you. I… don’t know your story… But I do mean what I say about Alessio. I do love him. I want what’s best for him. I don’t… know what the future holds. But if I’m alive… if I’m able to find him… I don’t want to lose him. I want to serve him… however I should.” Nithel brow crinkled and he looked at Leana, more tears flowing. He struggled to breathe, I want Avigail to make him her dumpling stew. For him to play with the kids, in the fields. To teach him how to carve. His eyes find Alessio just a moment, before squeezing his eyes shut. Oh, Holy One. This man raised Alessio. He hurt Alessio, but… only because he… loves Alessio… somehow… And he doesn’t know what love is. What do I do?

March 4, 2023 at 6:48 pm #156825Nathair was sulking in some corner of the room pretending he wasn’t sulking by reading all the labels on the still intact glass tubes.
He stopped when he heard someone behind him and turned to see Nithel with Leana clinging to him like the trusting innocent she was. What did he want now?
“I’m sorry…” Nithel said softly. “I shouldn’t have shouted at you. I…don’t know your story…”
That wasn’t what Nathair had expected.
It was several minutes before Alessio had enough mastery over himself to look around. But when he did Nithel wasn’t behind him, he was going after Nathair. Running after them, Alessio skidded to a stop in the background, still trying to hide. He didn’t want to be this close to him, but he couldn’t leave Nithel unprotected.
“…But I do mean what I say about Alessio. I do love him. I want what’s best for him.” Nithel was saying. “I don’t…know what the future holds. But if I’m alive…if I’m able to find him…I don’t want lose him. I want to serve him…however I should.”
Can we just go…please? Alessio stared at the floor, scared of catching Nathair’s attention. Please? They always believed him, he was so good at sounding right. Just make him go away. Please, please, please, please.
“So you really care, mm?” Nathair’s voice was pointed at Alessio, who sank behind Nithel a little more. He was asking whether Nithel was lying. No. Alessio glanced up a few seconds before looking away. Just long enough Nathair understood.
“Very well.” Nathair watched Nithel measuringly, for a long time. They both knew neither one trusted the other, and Alessio didn’t want to talk to him. Alessio peeked at Nithel for direction, uncertainly.
After a lengthy pause, Nathair broke the silence.
“Not to sound callous, but is there anything else you wanted?”
He didn’t trust Nithel, he just waiting to see what would happen now…

March 4, 2023 at 11:14 pm #156865“Not to sound callous, but is there anything else you wanted?”
Nithel swallowed hard, It’s not callus. It’s protective. *honestly a bit heartened by it* “I don’t know what else I could want…” Softly, his brows furrowing. He glanced down at Leana, and she stared up at him with those beautiful blue eyes. Teary. What if the only way to save Leana, was to let harm come to Alessio? To harm Alessio? His heart cracks a bit more, and he honestly wishes he was dead. It would be so much simpler. But… I am needed here, or I would be dead.
Nithel looked back at Alessio, and offered the shortest smile, but it faded quickly into a gaze deeper than the sea. I wouldn’t. Oh, Holy One! I wouldn’t harm either, to save the other. Am I weak? He pushed Leana off him, the smallest bit, and backed up until he was even with Alessio. (If Alessio isn’t looking, he’ll wait till he meets his eyes.) May I touch you, friend? Embrace you? He’d be content just to clasp his arm.

March 5, 2023 at 4:34 pm #156866The blind man was still shouting. At first, Hades tolerated it. Unfortunately, his patience was limited.
“Hey! Where’d the monsters go?!”
His companion, a young lady, facepalmed (as Serena would put it. Hades did it a few times himself). “Please stop drawing attention to yourself.
His eyes were scarred beyond recognition. It seemed that he was blind. “Why is everyone ignoring me?!”
“Please. Shut. Up.”
He promptly ignored his friend.
“Kind Punk! Notice me!” He cries out, “But Snake Punk can ignore me.”
Who? Who are these people? Was he talking about Leana? Then who was the snake?
“Wait. If Angry Punk is here, I can punch him.” If he was speaking of Sherlock, then it’s too late.
His friend keeps face palming. Suddenly, he grabs her by the arm and drags her to the group.
“KIND PUNK! You need to meet my friend.” He exclaims. “And Snake Punk, stop scaring people. And whoever brought the fire, you are a life-saver!” He’s… manipulating smoke? “Behave. For like, five rotations, m’kay?”
… “And after the meet-n-greet, we should investigate the magic pool I can for reasons unfathomable see.”
… Just get this over with.
Approaching the group, Hades spoke. “What’s your plan?”
Arsene had waited. And waited. Kage had taught him patience was great in many situations, but this was getting old. If he didn’t do something soon, he’d die of boredom.
“You know something, Old Snake,” Arsene started, “Whenever you talk, you sound like a fellow non-human, who’d like nothing more than to watch the world burn.”
Nithel was sending him a weird look.
“What?” Arsene said innocently.

March 5, 2023 at 6:33 pm #156867“I don’t know what else I could want…” Nithel said softly. Alessio clenched his jaw and glared at Nathair, who just smiled at him. Nathair was good at putting people on their defensive, with his words. Alessio didn’t know if he even consciously did it anymore…
He just wanted to run, as far away as possible. They didn’t need to get in trouble because of him he just had to run, right? It wouldn’t work, he knew that, he wanted to be safe. That’s all.
‘…they’ll never understand…’
That wasn’t, it wasn’t important. But families had to protect themselves, their own, at least for kind people. And if he put anyone in danger, if he was a danger, families had to protect themselves. That was just…that was always more important than him…
No, Nithel said he wouldn’t leave! Willingly. He wasn’t going to abandon him, even if it put not only him but his daughter in danger.
But…
Nithel smiled at him, for a second, before it faded to a sad, loving gaze so full of thoughts. That was different from the way anybody else looked at him. He didn’t feel just noticed he felt seen. And he didn’t know what to do with that.
“I made friends,” Alessio blurted, hoping that would make him happy. He was fidgeting awkwardly. Billions and billions of words flooded his brain. Could he learn about the Star Breather – that would make Nithel happy, right – was he supposed to be talking? “How-“
‘How are you’ seemed like a normal conversation…thing, but what he really meant was how long had it been in his world, how was this happening now, how was he real and still kind to him?
He glanced at Leana, who’d rushed to greet her father and clung to him this whole time so…was it ok if…Alessio grasped Nithel’s arm a moment to reassure himself that he was real but instead he leaned against Nithel, hugging his shoulder as if that would keep him from fading and keep him real.
“You know something, Old Snake,” Arsene skipped over, the look in his eyes just itching for trouble. And he found it with great glee. “Whenever you talk, you sound like a fellow non-human, who’d like nothing more than to watch the world burn.”
“Strange, whenever you talk, you sound like a unadulterated idiocy.” Nathair returned mildly. “Now, it might be a good idea to get moving before some new monstrosity comes to try and kill us, mm?”

March 5, 2023 at 11:50 pm #156868Alessio grasped Nithel’s, and the man’s eyes widened in a bit of shock. But when Alessio leaned against him, arm wrapped tightly over his shoulder, tears again filled Nithel’s eyes. He released Leana and put both arms around Alessio, tears rolling down his cheeks.
Leana pressed her lips together, watching them. She swallowed hard, and pulled in a shaky breath, looking back at Nathair. Are you okay?
Arsene skipped over and Leana smiled through her sorrow… until she heard Arsene’s next words. “You know something, Old Snake, whenever you talk, you sound like a fellow non-human, who’d like nothing more than to watch the world burn.”
Leana hands fisted at her sides. He doesn’t like being called ‘snake’… Why does everyone do that? Even my father? Use against him something he didn’t even have a choice in..? Leana lowers her eyes, just a moment.
“Strange, whenever you talk, you sound like a unadulterated idiocy.” Nathair returned, like sarcastic remarks were just stating the obvious truth. “Now, it might be a good idea to get moving before some new monstrosity comes to try and kill us, mm?”
Leana again almost smiled, but the ache in her chest made it hard. She looked at his face, then his arm. You still have glass in you. In your feet, too. Leana took a step toward him, and felt Nithel’s hand touch her arm. She turned, red hair sliding over her shoulder. “It’s fine, Papa.”
Nithel pressed his lips together, but let her go, looking at Nathair… thinking. One arm still tightly around Alessio.
“While you all decide where exactly we’re going, may I finish? Maybe my pack’s around here. There’s some antiseptic, and bandages. Needle and thread, too, if your cuts are deep enough.” What can I call you? Besides Nathair? Those were the two questions she wanted to ask, above all else, but business first. She started trying to think of a name.

March 6, 2023 at 5:01 pm #156911Leana was watching him in a very pathetic sort of way. Nathair raised an eyebrow as she moved toward him, still with that helpful sort of innocence. Nobody had ever really hurt her yet, had they? For her to still be that naïve…
Nithel made a move to stop her.
“It’s fine, Papa.” She said gently, like a girl with a stubborn streak. Nithel didn’t trust him, but he didn’t stop her either.
“While you all decide what exactly we’re going, may I finish? Maybe my pack’s around here.” She said, arguably with such blind optimism it was almost pathetic. “There’s some antiseptic, and bandages. Needle and thread, too, if your cuts are deep enough.”
“I really doubt we’ll have time for that first of all,” Nathair remarked “and secondly, if any of your supplies are actually around here, it will very likely take more time and energy than it’s worth to relocate them. Not to mention we’ll more likely die in the attempt to retrieve them than we will in the attempt to find new supplies.”
Then he smiled a little and raised a finger at her reproachfully.
“Thirdly, you might want to start by pulling the glass out of your own foot, you’re just pushing the stuff further in.”
@kimlikesart @ragnarok @hannahrennerTo be a light to the world you must shine in the darkness.
March 6, 2023 at 6:35 pm #156917Nithel came a step nearer, arm starting to slide off Alessio, knowing he had plenty glass of his own. They all did. But he wanted to check Leana.
–
Leana’s chest tightened a bit at Nathair’s rebuke, but she breathed in and out slowly. I’m not sure if it wouldn’t be worth it, getting the supplies. We worked hard for them. But, of course… maybe that’s why Amnesia let us have them… so we’d let them lead us into a trap… But isn’t this whole thing a trap? Couldn’t he bring bad things to us, no matter where we are? *tempted to stick her tongue out at him, but quashes the idea quickly*
Leana wavered, and glanced back toward Nithel. Only a fool has nothing left to learn, Papa says. Leana pressed her lips together, before looking back at Nathair and nodded once, rebuttals still behind her eyes. Leana limped back a step, and plopped to the ground. She made out the shard through all the blood. This is going to hurt… She gritted her teeth, and managed to grab the edge with her fingers.
—
Ohel’s case opened on the bottom, and he crawled out. But when he looked at the utter mess around him… He wanted to go back in.

March 8, 2023 at 7:32 pm #156927BURN
“What’s your plan?”
I tip my ear in the stranger’s direction. “Didja fall through a hole in reality too? Nevermind – we already know the answer.”
Plan. Plan. Implies I’m in charge. What idiot made that decision?
Tunnels in the Abyss it was me, right? I’m the idiot. Welp. There’s more responsibility for me to pawn of on Search.
“She’s the planner. I just tell her what she needs to know to plan.”
SEARCH
I’m the planner? You say that like plans can exist when you’re involved.
I facepalm again. “Okay. First off, lets see who’s even here. And if you can convince everyone to stop fighting, that would be wonderful.”
I point to Burn. Ugh. Bad idea. “He can’s good at investigating dangerous things. So once everyone here is on the same page, we’ll let him scout around and then we can make a real plan.” I self-consciously pull at the hospital gown and hope nothing is bouncing around. “We’ll need proper clothes, food, clean water, first-aid and anything like that are priority. Okay?”
“Got it.” Burn finger-guns in my direction as he starts to walk away.
I grab his arm. “When. We. Have. Done. The. People. Thing.”
Burn groans – loudly. “But they’re crazy.”
I wait two seconds and hop that sinks in. I can tell from his face it doesn’t.
Metal screams as it scraps together. I drop into a boxer’s stance, Burn instantly guarding my back. Then I relax, straightening again – I’d be embarrassed by my reaction if this … day? it can’t still be the same day right? Had been any less weird.
The tiny, glass prisons – they look like the stasis chambers from the Connelly Hospital – start sink into the floor. They are all gone in about five seconds.
“Interesting.” I turn back to the stranger. “Search. Your name?”
When life knocks you down, wait 'til it passes over you and then attack it from behind.
March 9, 2023 at 12:36 pm #156928Alessio buried his face into Nithel’s shoulder, wanting everything to stop, to just be safe for a few minutes.
There was so much he wanted to say and so many questions he wanted to ask. But he also didn’t want to move or breathe or do anything that might break the spell. Really he just didn’t want to be alone, with no one he could depend on.
Gradually, Nithel moved some, loosening his embrace somewhat. Alessio wasn’t ready to let go but life wasn’t going to just stop because he wanted it to. So he reluctantly looked around, starting to come up with a plan. They’d have to get moving.
There were more people now, that loud blind guy and his friend and…Ohel was crawling free from his glass cage. Are you ok…? Actually Alessio had all but forgotten him but he felt kind’ve sorry for him now. Not enough to trust him or willingly talk to him too often but…kind’ve sorry.
Arsene was pestering Nathair.
It would be ok, it’d be fine, c-calm down. As long as no one rejected Nathair or thought…as long as everyone was fine with him, Nathair wouldn’t have a reason to hurt anyone. As long as they stayed out of his way and…
Alessio clenched his jaw while the man talked to Leana. Alessio couldn’t stand the sound of his voice. He couldn’t. stand. hearing it. Not just in his head now. He couldn’t take it. Just make him go away! He hated him, he hated him so much.
Except he didn’t, and that scared him more.
Nathair watched Leana hobble a step and drop to the ground, digging at her bloody foot. Well. She actually listened. He’d just said that to be annoying…
Speaking of, he really should get the rest of that glass out of his foot – if just for appearances. Right now, though, he was watching Alessio, who was deliberately glaring at the floor, or anywhere away from him. But the boy still stalked past him to kneel beside Leana and offer a ripped strip of fabric to her with a very clumsy sort of gentleness.
Nathair glanced at the girl and Nithel, and smirked a little.
“Mm, you always wanted a sister, didn’t you?” Nathair remarked, causing Alessio to go completely rigid, flushing bright red. He was too easy. “And you haven’t said anything, have you?”
This, at least, got a flustered glower in his actual direction.
Back in time when the kid practically worshipped him, that could be the subject of his babbling not infrequently. In fact, he used try to adopt people all the time and have a ‘new sister’ and he wouldn’t hug anybody unless they were ‘family’.
He really missed that time, now Alessio seemed determined to starve him of any attention.
@kimlikesart @ragnarok @hannahrennerTo be a light to the world you must shine in the darkness.
March 9, 2023 at 4:59 pm #156933“Didja fall through a hole in reality too?” A what? “Never mind – we already know the answer.”
Why was everyone acting weird?
“She’s the planner.” The blind man points at his friend. “I just tell her what she needs to know to plan.”
His companion facepalms again, before voicing her opinion. “Okay. First off, lets see who’s even here. And if you can convince everyone to stop fighting, that would be wonderful.”
She then pointed at the blind man, only to wear a face of regret soon after. “He’s good at investigating dangerous things. So once everyone here is on the same page, we’ll let him scout around and then we can make a real plan.”
She then pulled at her hospital gown, appearing rather disgusted about it. “We’ll need proper clothes, food, clean water, first-aid and anything like that are priority. Okay?”
“Got it.” The blind guy smirks, proceedings to walk away.
She then grabbed his arm, as if pulling a misbehaving child back. “When. We. Have. Done. The. People. Thing.”
He grumbles, making everyone aware of him. “But they’re crazy.”
An evil sound of metal scrapping soon fills the room, as the glass prisons lower into the floor. They all vanish within seconds. Hades didn’t want to consider what it would be like to still be in those things.
“Interesting.” She turn back to face him. “Search. Your name?”
Hades considered lying, but SOMEONE already knew his real name. He couldn’t use the alias ‘John Doe’, thanks to Arsene. The last thing he needed was that loud mouth breaking the very weak trust among the group.
“Hades.” he finally answered, “As for the fighting, I believed that’s solved for the most part. However, it seems that a few of our members were enemies in the past and that’s caused some conflict.”
Adjusting the mask on his face, Hades continued. “I do not know any of these people personally. Do you recognize anyone here?”
“Strange, whenever you talk, you sound like an unadulterated idiocy.” Nathair returned mildly. “Now, it might be a good idea to get moving before some new monstrosity comes to try and kill us, mm?”
Arsene made the fakest offended look possible, before answering. “Oh sorry, I thought you wanted me to call you something other than Old Snake.”
Nathair glared at him, as if he expected to burn a hole into his skull.
“As for some new monstrosity coming to kill us; don’t worry, the author has no plans to do that at the moment.” Arsene finished.
Nathair proceeded to ignore Arsene, and watch Leana and Alessio.
“Mm, you always wanted a sister, didn’t you?” Nathair remarked, causing Alessio to go completely rigid, flushing bright red. “And you haven’t said anything, have you?”
“I told him he needed to give her flowers, but he didn’t follow my genius advice.”
Chances were it was a terrible idea. But Arsene wanted to enjoy the chaos and mess with Alessio a little.”
Oh great, now Alessio was glaring at him too. This was excellent.

Nathair glanced at the girl and Nithel, and smirked a little.
Nithel caught the smirk, then looked at the pair with a growing tingly feeling inside. *hasn’t been around Leana over a year, almost two* *she’s never been around guys, really, though it’s always been assumed she’d marry* *though… Nithel wouldn’t mind if she stayed with him and Avigail forever… if she wanted* But… what Nathair seemed to be reading… Ah. That’s a no. Er… Why not? BECAUSE IT’S-! *stuttering thoughts, that make Nithel’s cheeks flush*
“Mm, you always wanted a sister, didn’t you?” Nathair remarked, and Alessio went rigid, his cheeks also flushing read. “And you haven’t said anything, have you?”
“I told him he needed to give her flowers, but he didn’t follow my genius advice.” Arsene, almost joking, but not.
Leana’s brows lift. She looked from Nathair, to Arsene, and back to Alessio. *completely oblivious/or ignoring all… that* “I always wanted a sister, too. I begged my mom for one, though it doesn’t really make a difference.” She chuckled a bit, looking back at her foot and wrapping the cloth around it. We need to tend your hand. “Finally, after I got a knave of a brother, one came. Her name’s Bethan. Do you have any brothers?” She glanced up, gaze meeting Alessio’s.
Leana’s calm tone made Nithel sigh a bit in relief. But only a bit. She’s not, at least… Oy. Nithel looks warily back at Nathair.

Ohel jumps to the side, almost like a crab, when all the glass cases disappear, and then all the glass on the floor goes down through cracks in the floor, along with the water. Eyes still wide, he stays on all fours, looking at everyone and blinking. Fly from this place, pumped in his mind. But as he looked along the walls, he saw no way out.

March 10, 2023 at 8:33 pm #156940“I told him he needed to give her flowers, but he didn’t follow my genius advice.” Arsene chirped. Are you done!?!? HE DIDN’T HAVE A CRUSH ON LEANA HE DIDN’T!!!!! WHY WAS EVERYONE TORMENTING HIM LIKE THIS!?!?!?!?!
“Bold words from someone thinks robbing a bank is the perfect way to get a date with his girlfriend.” Alessio grumbled under his breath. “And I don’t have the time or the energy to be romantically interested in anybody right now!”
Raising her eyebrows, Leana looked from Nathair to Arsene to him and Alessio bet she was intentionally ignoring…all of it. (He wished he could)
“I always wanted a sister, too.” She said, “I begged my mom for one, thought it doesn’t really make a difference.”
With a small, fond laugh, Leana began methodically wrapping her foot with the cloth. He’d torn it from the end of his clothes, not the best substitute bandage but it worked. She cast a glance at his hand for a second. Oh, right… It…might need some stitches, he could do that if he just had some thread and a needle…
“Finally, after I got a knave of a brother, one came. Her name’s Bethan.” She looked up at him brightly. “Do you have any brothers?”
Alessio nodded and smiled shyly, looking down.
“I have an older brother, Leander. He was older than me, so he was a lot…busier, and I didn’t see him very often. But whenever he did come home he always brought something back for me.” Relaxing a little, Alessio fidgeted with his hand, drawing little circles on his knees with soothing repetition. “He gave me my bow when I was nine.”
Alessio wished he had it now, it would’ve been nice to show it to her (and to shoot Nathair). It was intricately designed – or it was, most of the patterns were worn out and carefully scraped off to make it look less valuable – but it was modeled of Thayer’s bow, from vigilante ballets that were his favorite growing up. Mostly because, there was a hero out there, who protected the weak.
In most of the stories, Thayer was someone abuse victims would seek out for restitution. He was scarier than the monsters.

Hades adjusts his mask. “I do not know any of these people personally. Do you recognize anyone here?”
“I know Search!” Burn says happily. “And then there’s Snake-Punk. And …” His brow furrows. “Search…”
“… There were still people in those stasis chambers.”
I shiver. “Can we get them out again?”
Burn kneels over the hole – hands pressed flat against the round door. His brow furrows as he threads smoke through the cracks. He jerks back with a hiss. “It’s… solid. There’s solid floor under the door.” He jumps lightly to the next one. “Same here.”
I look at Hades. “Okay then.” I nod to the people. “Then lets worry about the things we can fix.”
Burn stays frozen over the door a moment. Then nods slowly. “Okay.” He stands. “I can do that.”
He’s a ranger – a Runner. A Scout. He’s seen as many towns and villages annihilated and massacred as he has thriving. And then the Vanished …
I close my eyes and take a deep breathe. This happens. You have to learn to keep going. Help the people you can. “Well Hades. It would seem most of the people in our group are gone. Why don’t you introduce us to your group.” I smile. “Burn’s the only person I’ve known before … whatever this is.”

Very well. This was reasonable. “I’ve learned the names of the people I was with, but as I have said I do not know anyone here personally.”
Glancing back at the group, Hades immediately noticed they were bickering about something. “The young lady is named Leana. She seems to be the nicest of the group so far. The boy is named Alessio. While he doesn’t seem directly malicious, he is paranoid about meeting new people.”
He then observed the unconscious detective and the thief. “The bizarre one over there calls himself Arsene Lupin. I’d keep a tight grip on your wallet whenever you’re in his presence. As for the other one, his name is Sherlock Holmes. I’ll leave it at that, since I can’t think of anything nice to say about him.”
There was something he was missing. Suddenly, Hades remembered. “The remaining two are named Ohel and Crorie. I know very little about them.”
That’s all. That’s all he knows. “I suggest we reunite with the group and coordinate something.”
