    Good evening, Ereki!

Thinking over your feedback from last week, I’ve decided to alter the direction of our annual theme discussion a bit: incorporate more analyzing of stories and practice exercises, though with an occasional discussion and article. However, I’m saving a “writing” exercise for next week, since we’re working on our guild war submission this week. 😉

That aside, this week’s exercise is to actually create the overarching conflict for a novel. This doesn’t have to be a novel you’re ever going to write, but the goal is to come up with an internal conflict and resulting external conflict that would be able to fill an entire novel.

Example: Say I have a character named Lucian who believes none of this thoughts and ideas matter because he is mute, but at the same time he wants nothing more than to impress his father. That’s his internal conflict. It pours over into his external conflict, where his goal to impress his father is blocked by a group of invaders who are spreading a plague that is killing his people and his father.

A final note: please try to create a new story conflict; as in, don’t use an example from your current WIP. I understand that coming up with a fantastic story conflict can take a long time in the outlining and editing process, but the goal here is just to come up with one. If you’re really slammed for time this week, you can improvise by using your current WIP’s conflict and explaining why you think it works so well, like we did with other books last week, but try to do the original exercise here 🙂

If you have extra time, feel free to critique the story conflict of other Ereki (including mine): what do you think would work, what wouldn’t, and why?
