That’s a good point you remembered about Eowyn. I haven’t read the books in a while either. :/
Just as an idea, it could be interesting to have a separate book club in the guild dedicated to re-reading and discussing LotR. Maybe we try to read a chapter every two weeks or some such. Just thought I’d throw out this idea!
I appreciate…[Read more]

I’ll be there! 😀
Quick Question: are the calls voice-only or actual video calls? (I’m pretty sure this question has been asked before, but I forgot the answer 😛 )

@karthmin Yeah, that makes sense. Â What I usually do with new ideas is write them down, satisfy my current curiosity about them, then when I can’t go any further without serious thought I put it aside and go back to my main WIP. Â Easier said than done, of course, but it usually works!

I’m more than happy to do it. I’ll organise it a bit and do a proper post on it and then we can have our first go at it in November. 🙂

@erekdale We’re planning our Second Monthly Video Call this coming Monday night at 6:00 PM EST! The first one was a success (for an exclusively introverted crowd, I think we did pretty good, anyway). XD
And now we’re going to go for round two. This call will have a main discussion topic to start off with, and then we’ll see where the conversation…[Read more]

@karthmin It’s not actually a fiery furnace, though it does feel like one from time to time. 😉
I work in a greenhouse…So— a plastic bubble that magnifies the heat of the sun. I’ve often thought that a greenhouse would be an interesting setting for a story, or at least a character that works in one.
I’m sure it’s very hard work, but anything ind…[Read more]

I’ve been thinking, as part of this subforum, that we could try a book club type thing. Us all reading the same book would be too much, but we could do something like what my mum’s book club does and try making a theme or genre for each month (such as fantasy, sci-fi, or a book with a movie adaption) and then each month we could all…[Read more]

Along the lines of this discussion, I’m wondering if anyone here has struggled with portraying true femininity in their stories. In most of my books, I find myself putting a sword or a bow in a woman’s hand in order to keep her engaged in the main conflict (particularly the climax). Otherwise, she’s on the sidelines. While I certainly don’t…[Read more]

@karthmin oh man you put that so beautifully.
Tolkien and Lewis are both my main role models for writing. I love the way they portray women in their books  because they really just treated their writing in general with such respect.
Society has slowly lost respectfulness for basically anything and anyone, and twisted the roles of the male and…[Read more]

I’m loving all this discussion about women in fiction at the moment! To be honest, I think women in specifically Christian fiction get a very raw and cliched deal. Keeping female characters interesting and empowered without making them radical feminists has been a longstanding struggle of mine and I still haven’t really come to a solid…[Read more]

@karthmin @princess-foo @morreafirebird
This is such a fascinating discussion! To be honest, I’d never really thought about the difference between the ways Tolkien and Lewis dealt with women, but having read a few biographies of both of them and analyses of their works, I’ve got a few points to add.
One is that Tolkien was Catholic and he had a…[Read more]

@morreafirebird @karthmin I’m just gonna dump some LOTR and Narnia thoughts here.
LOTR
- SOMEONE GIVE FARAMIR A HUG.
- I would follow Aragorn to the ends of the earth seriously he is so awesome.
- I was watching Return of the King with a friend for English class and we were taking notes. I was going over hers later and one line just said,…

Tinuviel replied to the topic What is it that makes your favorite book so special? in the forum Story Analysis 6 years, 8 months ago
@karthmin I hadn’t thought of it in that way, but that kind of back-but-not-the-same quality does add a lot to a story. I love fairy tale endings, but it adds depth when they are unable to quite go back to how it was, and ultimately makes it more satisfying and memorable.

Wow, reading your thoughts here just made my brain really excited xD Let me see if I can formulate some comments that make sense…
First, I love your analysis of the women Tolkien wrote about. It is interesting that he mainly portrayed only two opposites, one true femininity (nurturer, etc.) and the other false femininity (destroyer,…[Read more]

@karthmin Tbh when I read the question I had the hardest time thinking of just when did only two female characters ever interact in my books… Now that I think about it it seems that they’re either fighting or torturing one another or looking for a job or something or the other…no, definitely not over some guy unless it’s the bad guy because a)…[Read more]
