J.A.Penrose started the topic Goal of the Guild | Important in the forum Announcements 7 years, 8 months ago
Okay Parimis. This is an important post that we all need to look at. Please be sure to read it all the way through!
Our vision for the guilds is to form a tight-knit group of creators who encourage and inspire each other in their craft. As guildmasters, we’re trying to help build this spirit of camaraderie and we have lots of different opportunities where you can join in the effort. This is what we are wanting from everyone, not just a few here and there. A family needs to have everyone in it to function.
1) Critiques. It’s SO helpful to have your work critiqued, and we want to make a place where you can be open and unafraid to share snippets and ideas. That means we need people to actually be willing to get in and critique. You guys have been fairly good with this, and I’ve noticed quite a few different voices for each critique. But there’s twenty-seven people here. We need to see if we can have a few more people talking, ideally everyone saying at least a few words about each topic.
2) Accountability. There’s nothing more inspiring than to know that someone else is holding you accountable to your writing goals. I will admit that I haven’t been the best at reminding people of this, and we haven’t looked into it that much. D: But in our thread for accountability, if you make a topic about a goal, people are going to see it and hold you to that goal. Kinda like being in a Camp NaNo Cabin. This is a two way exchange, (as always) and we should all be helping each other keep accountable.
3) Improving your craft. Every week, I post a new lesson or discussion idea on our current topic and that’s your chance to learn how to strengthen and hone your writing skills. Let me give you a little glimpse into my side of this: every Monday, I spend approximately 2-4 hours brainstorming a lesson, looking up references, finding inspiration, and writing out the post for you. And no, this is not my job, and my working takes up between 9-10 hours a day (travel included). I do not have unlimited time to do whatever, just like you guys. I know people can be super busy, and sometimes life happens and you don’t get things done. Despite this, I really want my leesons to mean something and be worthwhile. They are exclusive to you guys! That’s awesome! You essentially have a free course right here. If you ignore it, you’re being unfair to both yourself and me. You’re missing an opportunity to learn something that maybe you didn’t know before. Even if you do know it, completing the lesson and posting it is part of what helps other people to learn too.
4) Prompt Guild Wars. This is a chance to learn from the other writers in your guild. You get to write with them, see their edits, brainstorm ideas, etc. I personally love these sort of things. It gives you a chance to practise writing with a topic, a word limit, and a time limit. It also lets you see what other people think. And then you get to try your hand at editing and critiquing. It’s a great time to learn new things, and also help other people. If everyone pitches in, not only is it a huge lot of fun and more likely for a victory, but it’s educational for all involved. Guild wars are more than just a novelty–they’re a practical chance for you to learn and help others.
5) A place to ask (and answer!) questions. The writing life is a life of constant learning. If you have a question, the guild is an awesome place to put it (under ‘Parimi Alca Writing Discussion’ subforum). Don’t be shy. If you see someone else asking a question and you know the answer…answer it! (This also helps platform building guys! To be honest, when there are people I see answering questions and knowing what they’re talking about, I’m waaaaay more inclined to look at what else they have to say in their books and on their websites.) And we really want to be a helpful writing community who can help each other with any of the little things that come up.
When we all work together, the guild runs like clockwork. And that’s the sort of place we want to be in.
I can’t do this alone though. I need all of you awesome Parimis to try and help me make Parimi Alca a stellar guild. I can throw ideas out there and send you all notifications on a fleet of dragons, but unless you all join in and participate, nothing will happen…aside from the guild turning stagnant that is.
I know there are some of you who are frantically trying to fulfil this and make Parimi Alca into the most amazing place one could write in. And man, I appreciate it! And guess what? There are people out there who have signed up for a guild, but haven’t been allowed in yet because there’s no room.
But if there are people who aren’t doing anything, and are being inactive, then that is hardly fair to either of these parties. I get it that sometimes you sign up for things and then realise that you don’t actually want anything to do with it. Or maybe the commitment outweighs the bonuses. If this is you, contact me at j.a.penrose.writer(at)gmail.com and tell me. I’ll remove you from the guild and allow for others to make it in.
That leads me up to the actual announcement. There’s two parts of this:
1) We’re asking all members to be active in the guild at least once a week. This only needs to take about ten-thirty minutes of your time, and it can still make a huge difference. (Obviously, more than once a week is ideal, but not always possible with busy schedules.) Give it a shot and watch relationships form.
2) All current inactive members will be removed from the guild in another week or so. They will still be able to be on the SE forum, but not in a guild.
However—I definitely understand the busyness of life. If you’re going on a trip or you know that the next month or so is going to be insanely busy, just let me know! Make a post/topic somewhere in the guild (or email me: j.a.penrose.writer(at)gmail.com ) so that I know you’ll be back. If you leave for a little while, you don’t need to worry about coming back only to find that you’ve been kicked out.
In this guild, (And all of the guilds for that matter) we’re looking to build a long-term support group. Which means that I’m not going to toss people out because of tiny little short term absences. What sort of family would that be? 😛
That just about wraps up the announcement. Thank you for reading through all of that. I hope that together we can make this guild super amazing and become a great team. *claps for everyone* GO PARIMIS!!!!!!!!!
