Welcome to our lovely frosty (or maybe sweltering, depending on where you are) first lesson of July! We’re going to be focusing on emotions in storytelling today. What do emotions have to do with pacing and suspense? Glad you asked.
It’s all very well to write a scene that has an insane amount of tension in the action. After all, he only just dodged that bullet and she barely worked out the riddle in time, but without emotions, all of that is dead.
I mean, there’s a bg difference between these two snippets, isn’t there?
He ducked as the bullets sprayed against the door, barely in time to save being turned into a rather dead person.
He ducked as the bullets sprayed against the door, his heart thudding against his chest. The sound of the gunshots was drowned out by his gasping breaths and the blood roaring through his ears.
Which had you on the edge of your seat the most? Yup. The one with emotions. For all of the other aspects of pacing and suspense to even be relevant, you need to get some emotions down pat so that the readers care.
Today’s task is for you to take note of your emotions through the day and see how they change depending on your situation.
Have fun!
