If it helps, @calidris once gave me some great advice when I was doubting Aydin. She told me to imagine if they had grown up in completely normal circumstances. Would they still have those traits? For Aydin, that was a resounding yes.

Thanks so much for your answers! I do like to categorize things, but I was a bit concerned about not wanting a label to wind up defining a character. Which isn’t really an actual issue for me because my characters are themselves and categorizing them other ways doesn’t change that. So…

I do think it’s a valid concern, but since you’re concerned about it, I doubt it’ll be an issue because it’s already something you’re trying to avoid.  If it helps, I try to use character traits that could become “labels” as a background to explain actions, rather than adding actions because they relate to a trait.  So, for this e…[Read more]
