Hey guys, here’s an important post from Jane Maree.

It’s Okay to be not just a Writer

For the first ten – twelve years of my life, I went through a lot of different versions of “I want to be a -BLANK- when I grow up.”

I want to be a superhero. I want to be a firefighter. I want to be a donkey. You know, the classic old things everyone wants to become.

I cycled through florist, nurse, chef, teacher, musician, actress, writer, and on and on.

As is probably obvious, right now I’m an author and editor. But that doesn’t mean I don’t still enjoy all those other things I once hoped to become.

I love acting! I love music! I have so many different passions outside of writing, and you know what?

    That’s okay.

Just because I mainly focus on my writing, doesn’t mean I can’t also enjoy and practice my other passions. It’s good to have other things to learn and develop alongside your major craft/career. It can help spur creativity in new and unique ways.

You’re a writer, but that doesn’t mean you’re not also an actor, musician, dancer, fill-the-blank. Don’t define yourself too closely by one badge and try to squeeze your creativity into one small box. We were made for more than this.

This is a super short topic, but I hope it’s no less encouraging for that. If you’re struggling to work out whether you’re a writer or an -insert your other skills here- maybe what you really need to realise is that you can be both.

What other skills/hobbies do you have outside of writing?
