The advice to get a group and let other writers critique my work is coming from all sides lately. I’m wondering, how do you all do that?
I mean, I know there’s the forum, but (and maybe this is just idealistic) I’m thinking something like, I don’t know, the Inklings lol, and I haven’t seen anything like that online yet. Maybe I’m just…[Read more]

@abigail-rebekah I’ve never heard of John J. Horn. I’m always looking for new authors to love though! Which book of his would be best to start with?

THERE ARE HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON BOOKS?! How did I not know this lol?
@urwen-starial I write about young people and their adventures, historical or contemporary. I write poetry too. What are your stories about?
I’m a runner, I’m learning Korean, and I love listening to Lisa Hannigan and anything Jack White (he’s been involved in a few…[Read more]

@urwen-starial Hi! Nice to meet you 😀
You do so many cool things! Is your username something you invented or is it from something? What does it mean? It sounds awesome 😀

@josiah That’s awesome!
I’m reading The Divine Comedy now, and Pride and Prejudice is an old favorite of mine too. I haven’t read the others you mentioned. The classics are on my list though! Mistborn . . . Is that Brandon Sanderson? I started watching one of his classes on Youtube and wanted to find something of his to read. I read Ender’s Game…[Read more]

@evelyn It’s still really cool that you’ve written so much! I haven’t read any of her books, but I remember that Jodi Picoult quote “You can always edit a bad page. You can’t edit a blank page.” when I’m tempted to edit my thoughts into nothingness before I’ve even said anything.
I’d still love to hear about your novels, and if you want someone…[Read more]

@josiah I’ll definitely start Crime and Punishment next then 😀 You said before that you taught through that book – what does that mean?
What are some of your other favorite books and authors?

@evelyn That’s so cool! It’s been a while since I’ve gone to an English Country Dance. All of my friends got into swing dancing lately, so the last few dances I attended were swing. It’s hard to practice some of that stuff without a group, you know?
I want to read Crime and Punishment too. I probably should have started there, but a friend r…[Read more]

@clevercraftsman Oh gosh, so hard to pick just one! Manalive is the first novel of his I read, and that’s really what got me hooked, so that’s a good starting place. The Man Who Was Thursday is awesome, as are the Father Brown stories. For non-fiction, G.K. Chesterton’s Orthodoxy is fantastic. I know you said you don’t read poetry much, but he al…[Read more]

@seekjustice I haven’t read The Martyr of the Catacombs. I’ll look it up!
Your story sounds really cool 😀 If you ever need a beta reader/second opinion let me know. I’d love to read it!
Also, I’m totally going to follow your blog now lol 😀

@clevercraftsman Till We Have Faces is very different for C.S. Lewis, so if you really like a lot of his other stuff it may not be your cup of tea. I enjoy when an author does something new, like Bleak House for Charles Dickens, or The Prince and the Pauper for Mark Twain. It’s like them, but not like them, you know? Anyway I think it’s reall…[Read more]

@seekjustice Hi! YES, Hard Times is amazing! I haven’t read Little Dorrit yet, but read and loved all the others you mentioned. I guess I should add that to my reading list!
How do dogs make you money? That sounds interesting 😀
I love listening to music! I play piano (though I don’t practice very much anymore and I’m getting rusty lol :P) so I…[Read more]

@josiah Thank you! I feel a little pretentious now because I’m a recent addition to Dostoevsky fans. I’ve only read The Brothers Karamazov, but I was so moved by it I knew I’d found a new favorite author. I’d like to start reading another work of his. Any suggestions for which to read next?

@clevercraftsman Hi! So nice to meet you 😀
I did read At the Foot of the Rainbow. I agree, I didn’t like it as much as the others. I finished Keeper of the Bees, but it’s also not my favorite. My favorite (after Girl of the Limberlost, of course) is probably The Harvester. Or maybe they’re tied. Freckles is really good too!
My favorite Ch…[Read more]

@seekjustice Warrior Scarlet is about a boy with a crippled arm in Bronze Age Britain. There’s a Wolf Killing test that all the boys in the tribe have to pass to become warriors and wear the Warrior Scarlet, and he has to try to pass it with his impediment. Really great story. I don’t want to spoil it in case you end up reading it. 😀
That s…[Read more]

Hi @seekjustice! I’ve never heard of M.L. Stedman. I’ll have to look him/her (?) up. 😀
Favorite Rosemary Sutcliff is Warrior Scarlet. The Roman Britain Trilogy is pretty awesome too though!
Do you have any current historical fiction WIP?

Hi! I’m always pleasantly surprised to find someone who likes Gene Stratton-Porter too! I only discovered her by looking through my library’s retirement shelf – for books so old and infrequently borrowed that the librarians were taking them out of general circulation. She’s so amazing, and Girl of the Limberlost is epic! Elnora…[Read more]

@abigail-rebekah The hardest eras for me are Stone Age and Ancient. I love knowing all the little every day details, how people would think, and the farther the time period is from now the harder it gets to find reliable information on the small stuff. Maybe I just haven’t found the right resources yet. I know authors like Rosemary Sutcliff did a…[Read more]
