Hey guys! I’m still not entirely sure how this group thing is supposed to work but I’m gonna give it a shot 😉
What do you love about writing romance? 🙂 -

My story is like Gotham (and many, many other Batman stories) meets The Naturals -but cleaner and not as creepy as those…although, it’s actually still kind of creepy and I’m working on trying to adjust that…
Does anyone else struggle to form villains that are realistic and wicked, but not so dark that you’ll give your readers nightmares? Any tips?

What are your thoughts on the use of flashbacks to provide important information? Should they be avoided at all costs? Or can they be applied practically?

I used them heavily in my story, but I structured the story so it was expected. Each chapter began with a flashback of some sort that related in some way to what would happen in the upcoming chapter. None of the people who read the first draft for me had any complaints about it, and I have seen published novels use a similar structure. If it’s…[Read more]

A good mystery is a good mystery, so where there’s one to be found I’m always there. 😉
I’ll admit, I haven’t read many of the books… I got sort of sidetracked with Sanderson. I like all the the Robert Downey Jr. movies however(though, slight content warning on those – nothing too crude if I remember correctly but some language), and I love the…[Read more]

@pensword Oh, awesome! Yeah, I’ve heard good things about the Basil Rathbone Holmes movies. 😀 I should check them out sometime!

Two is hard. I always say that my mystery WIP is most like The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (NOT an endorsement), but a combination, hm. Probably the above with a dash of Jack Reacher.

I’ve read the entire series of books/short stories at least once. Some stories I’ve read multiple times. I’ve also enjoyed several of the old Basil Rathbone/Nigel Bruce movies, and I’m a fan of the show. I haven’t seen the RDJ movies though.

YESSS! Totally. 😀 I love the cases so much! I can’t wait to finish the series, even though that won’t be for a while, haha.
I can understand that. He’s nothing like the original character, but that’s what makes me like the movies. He’s so unique (the movies are HILARIOUS, LOL) and so different from Conan Doyle’s Sherlock that it makes the…[Read more]

@bigideaskc – YES, I love Sherlock Holmes. The cases are so clever, so witty, so captivating (even if you’ve read all of them hundreds of times, like I have xD) that it got me interested in writing mystery. There’s a lot of awesome cases, so you’re in for a treat. 😉
I haven’t watched that movie, because Robert Downey, Jr. is not remotely how I…[Read more]

‘Ello, Emberlings! I know this is a forum for writing mystery, not reading mystery, but I still wanted to ask – are there any fellow fans of the Sherlock Holmes books (and/or most recent movies with Robert Downey, Jr. and Jude Law)? I found the last book, The Return of Sherlock Holmes, a little while ago and decided to pick it up and read a bit of…[Read more]

I guess I’ll go! I would say mine is a combination of Dead Poet’s Society and End of the ******* World. Though it’s completely clean, it’s a story about two kids running away from a very facade-esque town to grow and experience the real world, but as the story goes on we find about a deep root of abuse and hurt in one of the character’s lives.

@joshuapior Good question! Hmmmm… I guess it would be Maleficent: Mistress of Evil (wings) meets Chronicles of Narnia (battles and good sides/bad sides and such)? Or Maximum Ride (wings) meets quality. 😏 *glares at the movie that TOTALLY could’ve been better*

Hello!
I’m back from having dropped off the earth from a while and haven’t been doing a ton of writing but I have a work in progress that’s sort of Homeward Bound meets psychological thriller without the animals. I’ve been rather uninspired lately, honestly—how do you all keep motivated? For context, I’m a college student with too much free time a…[Read more] -
