    Hi guys!

Since there were two votes for world building when I asked, and when I looked at the answers filled out in the guild application forms there was also several requests for it, I thought we’d start out our year talking about world building.

World building is important whether your story takes place in the real world, or a made up one, and no matter what time period. A well developed world has as much value as a well developed character.

So to get this conversation rolling, I’d like to know what your favorite fictional world is. What story comes to life for you because of the setting it takes place in? Can you think of any key details that make it stand out above the others? What can we take from that to apply to our own writing?

For me, my favorite world is the one from Six of Crows. Though I don’t necessarily recommend those books to everyone, the world building in the story is fantastic. Each country is so unique, and though I could see similarities to our own countries (Asia in particular) none of them felt like direct copies or cliches. The author developed everything from each cultures clothing, language, weather, customs, etc. without overwhelming the story. The details she included advanced the plot and characters instead of bogging them down. I was also really impressed that the inhabitants were all human. So often in fantasy we see humans, elves, dwarves, and then some kind of urgal/goblin type creatire. Which isn’t necessarily bad because I like those creatures too, but it was definitely unique.

    What do you guys think?
