Eeep! Where do I begin? Everyone had some really good recs, especially The Giver (one of my favorites) Fahrenheit 451, and the Chronicles of Prydain.
I mostly read MG, but I’ve found some with great themes. If you’re interested, they are:
The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle and Crispin: Cross of Lead (by Avi)
The Bronze Bo…[Read more]

imwritehere1920 replied to the topic This isn’t what it looks like… But how do I show readers that? in the forum General Writing Discussions 5 years, 8 months ago
Hi! I just stumbled across this thread today (sorry for being late to the party *embarrassed grin*). I really liked everyone’s suggestions, and agree with what they’ve said. If it also helps, maybe consider mentioning that two of these three characters already like someone else. I’ve noticed that someone suggested the…[Read more]

Thanks guys for this series! It’s been really thought-provoking. I’ve been thinking about ways an implicit Christian story can still point back towards God and glorify Him (especially when it’s ending is bittersweet). I think you best summed it up with this paragraph:
“However, simply pouring darkness into our fictional worlds won’t change h…[Read more]

Hi there! So glad you joined the conversation. You have an amazing story on why you write. Thanks so much for sharing!
I’m learning how to connect my writing with walking with God too. And it’s always hilarious to visit your very first story you wrote.
I wish you the best of luck with your writing journey! 🙂

Hey nice to meet you! No, I haven’t published a book yet. Though I am very interested in self-publishing.
Yikes, I hope the problem will work itself out. I’m in the middle of taking a look at your first chapter, and I love the hook. It’s strong and compelling.
I love reading MG too! I grew up with a lot of MG/Children’s book…[Read more]

Hi, I’m Lily and I love writing MG too! That is so wonderful that your favorite author got to read a part of your work. I’m so sorry he passed away.
I know this reply came a bit late, but I’m definitely curious about your book (and checking it out right after this; thanks for the link). I wish you all the best as you write for ch…[Read more]

That’s cool that you homeschool too. And I have used hairspray to keep my hair in curls too XD (unfortunately, my hair has a mind of it’s own 😉 )

My family homeschools; how about you?
And yes, if I do get onto YWW, I will look for you 😉
Cool, your sister did a great job! (My hair is too straight to do much with XD)

Hey, how’s it going? Thanks, I liked your points too. The illustrations helped to show your point 🙂
As for my age… it’s anywhere between 13 and 30 XD Jk. I like to keep it a mystery 😉 Anyway, Happy (really really early) Birthday! (Just in case I forget to tell ya 🙂 )

Sorry, I misunderstood my sister. She thought I was talking about just MG, and not both MG and little kids. The Penderwicks is an MG story; it just might be sad for younger kids because they talk about their mom who died of cancer. After discussing it some more, the story Prince Martin Wins His Sword (by indie author Brandon Hale) mi…[Read more]

Hey, no problem. Again, I apologize if I gave too much info 🙂 Your YA books sounds really interesting (let me guess, you’re a LoTR fan?) And that’s awesome that you get to tell stories to your younger siblings (how many do you have, if you don’t mind me asking?)

Hey there! Long time no see 😉
Okay, so first off, who is your main target audience? If it’s supposed to be MG, then the protagonist’s age is going to be around your target audience’s age (generally the 8-12 range). Sometimes, your protagonist can be a bit older (think early teens). But I mostly see that in older MG (think Ran…[Read more]

Oh wow, the exact same thing happened to my current WIP! I originally planned it to be a short story of 6,000 words (and I hoped to sell it to a children’s magazine) but after about, oh, 40,000 words, it became apparent that it was going to be a novel XD And no problem, your explanation wasn’t long-winded.

Which writing website do you use?
I can’t tell much, but my WIP is about a brother and sister who find a lost phoenix and have to return it home (it’s much more complex than that; this is just the gist).

So true! World building (and making up your own rules) is a lot of fun. And it really lets you explore certain themes that is harder to capture in other genres.
