Tullian
A man rolled in, sitting in a chair. It was newer and better designed than any he had seen. He started to wonder what country the man came from, but his thoughts broke off mid-sentence.
pain shot up and down his right leg, overwhelming the other emotions that bombarded him. He categorized them almost unconsciously.
Anger, resentment,…[Read more]

@calidris, lol thanks!!!!

@calidris no. I’ve heard of the book, though. I think the version I use is the 3-act structure.

@I have a bunch of notes from a plot structure seminar, if that would help. I’m sure you have plenty of excellent resources, though!

Here are some things a MC can lose:
Life
Dreams
Relationship
Object
Sin habit
Reputation/social standing
Story goal

P.S. last time I helped someone, they had to ask the same question three times before I understood and gave the right answer. Just FYI. 😀

Here you go! I’m not totally happy with this, but I don’t feel like I can go any further without checking back with you.
Characteristic Moment–Emotional core: longing (What is the MC’s idea of the good life. Show us who that character is at the core.)
Jade, longing to become a ballerina, and keep those she loves from h…[Read more]

@E-N-Leonard Is the nuking of America and the rising of the Haven back story, or is it in the book? Also, who is a main character? I’m guessing Mara and Jade are the two MCs, no?
What I’m going to do, is get my outline template out and plug your story into it, where it fits, and then we can talk about it–What you need to add or cut or change.…[Read more]

@e-n-leonard I have determined to write my WIP and risk failing. I can always rewrite it when I’m a better author.
@calidris sounds good! Also, can’t wait to see your blog!

@e-n-leonard my email address is above, if you ever want to reach out! Or, if there’s enough of us, we could nip over to the plotting forum and start a new thread.
I figure out the structure before I draft, so it doesn’t have to big me down later; maybe that’s something you could try.
Apparently 75% of women are better with characters, so…[Read more]

@calidris I didn’t explain myself well (a usual problem lol). To uncode the email address, remove the spaces and change the obvious words–dot and at– to appropriate symbols.
If you like staying on the SE site, there is this brainstorming thread already https://storyembers.org/forums/topic/brainstoming-anyone/

@calidris we could have them all together. Voltemand will refuse, and Tul doesn’t have any possessions, per se.
Here! My email address is emily waldorf 2021 at outlook dot com ( I coded it so robots don’t steal it.) Go ahead and shoot me an email. Or, if you’d rather, we could do it in SE. 🙂

@lady-grace that’s okay. I obviously have no idea how old you are, but for me, I read it in my late teens and wouldn’t have recommended it to myself much earlier. Give it a few years, and try again. 🙂 (But do try it again, someday. 🥰)

@e-n-leonard I know! I read the last nine chapters in 3 hours, with recurrence of the same strong emotion! That John 11 quote! How is it possible to switch from past to present tense for the last chapter. I’m so glad you enjoyed it. We must talk about it over tea someday. 🙂

Tul looks a bit of a jerk, this way 🧐
TULLIAN
He shifted away from Voltemand. He was still angry with the Voice, and not especially comfortable to be around just now.
Not like the people he was walking toward were any better. The air felt heavier already, and even with all his self-control he was breathing hard by the time he was close enough…[Read more]

TULLIAN/VOLTEMAND
It was dark. Too dark to be canny.
“Where are we?” Tullian’s whisper boomed into echoing space.
Voltemand didn’t answer. He walked forward a few cautious steps, listening.
From somewhere in front of them, a noise like scuffling and whispering from a crowd of people was going on.
“Now would be a good time to do some of your…[Read more]

@calidris no. My mom and sisters are, though! That’s frustrating, but it sounds normal. I think it’s related to my problem. I want my WIP to be absolutely perfect, and I’m scared that if I write it, it won’t be…I know, not the brightest philosophy, but there it is. I love plotting stories! @calidris thanks! I know Kit, Val, Myra, and Frey, but who are the other folks in here? That last challenge sounded so awesome!!
I’m not sure yet who I’ll drop in.
My writing is… complicated. I’m taking a prose course (from Story Embers’ very own Hope Ann), and have not been doing much else, which is driving me mad. Maybe this castle will…[Read more]
