This one was inspired by a line of another song. It just jumped out at me, so I scribbled it down in my notebook. Later, when I read over the line again, the idea for this song/poem arose and so here it is. Enjoy and critique to your heart’s content!

    Up spring
Once in a desert, parched and ever to pine,
There I was hardened and brittle bone.
But that’s when You arrived, raining love divine.
Up sprung a well from this heart of stone.

Once in a cell, so deafened and hid in dark,
There I was heart lost in sorrow’s arc.
But that’s when You arrived singing “I’ve atoned.”
Up sprung a song of the sweetest tone

    And here am I reborn and remade;
But there are those still lost, living in gray.
If I’m to imitate the price You paid
Let me be in my every way

    Where souls are thirsty
May I be the well from which they may drink
    Where souls are hungry
May I be the bread providing them meat
    Where their souls are crying
May I sing the song to turn them to You
Let up spring from me a life lived out for You

Here in the desert, parched and deathly dry,
I am to search for the lost who cry.
When it seems the pain presses me to groan,
Up springs the thought I am not alone.

Here in the dungeon, shadowed, sad and still,
I am to play them the song “He atones.”
Here is my tongue, so let notes from me spill.
Up spring the hope they are not alone.

So here am I commissioned for You
To tell them of the love Your dying proved.
If they’re to see Your heart is ever true,
Let me be a strong-living proof.

    Where souls are dying
May I be the breath to raise their souls
    Where souls are slaving
May I be a savior to shatter their chains
    Where souls are longing
May I be a hope to illuminate the path to You
Let up spring from me a service for you

And here am I rescued and remade
But there are those still lost, living in the gray.
If they’re to see Your love is ever true
Let me be faithful, living proof.

And here am I, human and so frail
But all the watchmen are called to watch, not fail.
Since I may be the tool that You will use
Let me in my every way
    Up springing life for You
