@SCRIBBLES
HIWELCOME BACK
I was actually working at a jobsite for a few weeks this last month with a big silver maple storybook tree in the backyard that was home to like a thousand squirrels. Anyway, I thought of you and was like “too bad she’s not around anymore” BUT NOW YOU ARE.
That’s the point, I guess.

One of the biggest challenges with writing speculative fiction is clarifying how your story’s magic and/or technology works. Once you’ve accomplished the monumental task of developing those systems, how do you edu […]

This helped me a lot! I’ve been writing a lot of sci-fi lately and having a hard time explaining futuristic technology without going into too much detail or boring the reader. Awesome post!

Couple of thoughts:
First off, Gene Roddenberry once said, in regard to Star Trek’s phasers, Joe Friday doesn’t stop to explain how his .38 police revolver works. He just uses it, and the viewer sees the results.In my current work, when time travelers answer questions about future technology to people from the Middle Ages, most of the explanation is basically simple stuff the reader knows. The interesting part is the natives’ reactions to what they’re told — shock, disbelief, angry disbelief, disgust, outright hair-raising fear.
And there’s room for humor.
“Margreet told me that she lives in a city that goes around the Moon.”
“Get out with ye now! Imagine the set of wheels that must take! Or do they use giant sails?”

Loved the inclusion of “It’s a Wonderful Life”.
Natural outcomes is sometimes hard for me. Like what’s natural? People getting what they deserve; sowing what they reap? Or, bad people sometimes getting away and good people getting hurt? I personally think it’s a mixture of both, on earth anyways. We all get our dues after death. How do you choose where justice gets served? Just my thoughts.¯_(ツ)_/¯
I really likes seeing all the character’s foils laid out like this. It did make me think back to my own characters and their roles.
Great article!

@emma-starr
Well then.you have certainly done your homework.
I’d say if you’re not going to write an outline, then just jump in and start writing! You sound more than prepared!
HAVE FUN!

@emma-starr, I’ll add onto what Josiah said. There are a lot of successful plotters and pantsters, but one advantage of plotting things out first is that it forces you to learn about story structure and apply it to your story. So, my piece of advice would be that if you decide to go without an outline, pick up a craft book and study some story…[Read more]
