    Hey everyone!

I don’t know how everyone will feel about this, so I’m sorry if I hurt or offend anyone as it’s not my intention — I’m simply trying to stick with my conscience.

So, I’m looking into making webtoons, I was wondering if anyone has any good comic recommendations because the only ones I’ve managed to find always wind up having random LGBTQ stuff I’d just prefer to avoid (like a random gay relationship that didn’t need to be there).

It’s not that I hate this kind of thing in stories, but I’m tired of feeling like I’m forced to endure something sinful lauded as a good thing if I want to read comics enough so I can learn how to make my own.

So, do any of you have any tips? Or maybe some recommendations?

    Thank you!

    Hellooo!!

So, I’m not super well-versed in comics, it’s actually something I’m looking into because I’m going to apply to a comic design course later this year.

But, I do want to recommend Haikyu! It’s a manga and an anime, the writing is AMAZING and so is the art. (That anatomy and perspective, BEAUTIFUL) I love the way the paneling is done, and it shows how to show complicated action shots without confusing the audience.

It’s also clean, which is a great advantage! The fandom is weird and loves shipping everyone, which is gross and weird, so avoid them, but the manga itself doesn’t have any romantic subplots! There’s a very very minor one but it barely gets screentime.

I’m also currently watching Yona of the Dawn, which is clean so far! I haven’t gotten to the manga yet, but I have a Christian friend who read it and she said it’s really good!

I’m also currently reading “The Golden Age” by Cyril Pedrosa and Roxanne Moreil. I haven’t finished it, so I can’t give a good answer on how clean it is, but the art is BEAUTIFUL and the character design is super unique! I’ll tell you how it was once I’ve finished it!

Another comic that’s really beautiful is “Beatrice” by Joris Mertens. It’s a ‘silent’ comic without words, and I haven’t read it attentively yet, I just flipped through, but the art and color use is BEAUTIFUL and it’s great for ‘show don’t tell’.

Another book I recommend is “Making Comics” by Scott McCloud. It explains a lot of things like character design, process, paneling, and all kinds of stuff! It’s comic-style, so it’s easy to follow along and read through! It’s helped me a lot!

If you don’t mind the F-word, UnOrdinary (webtoon) is a great series. My siblings and I all like it. It’s a personal favorite of mine. Most of the cuss words are censored and they don’t use the Lord’s name in vain.

…Be it noted I’m only 2 episodes in so I can’t vouch for much but it’s hilarious XDDDDDDDDDDDD

If you like superheroes, the Daredevil comic series by Mark Waid is clean! Vol. 2 gets a little weird for a bit (supernatural-style weird), but overall it’s really good! I also really liked The Defenders: Diamonds are Forever (which censors cussing).

To piggyback on @rose-colored-fancy’s recommendation, Scott McCloud’s book “Understanding Comics” is also really good! I really appreciated it just from a writer’s perspective, and I imagine it’s even more helpful in an actual comic-writing context.

Oh! And as webcomics go, the only one I’ve started reading is The Silver Eye by Laura Hollingsworth. I’ve found the storyline a little hard to follow? It seems to jump around on the timeline a bit and get confusing. But I generally like the characters and the art and the worldbuilding.

I wish I could recommend The Tea Dragon Society by Katie O’Neill, but unfortunately the one problem I had with that one was the same issue you’re specifically trying to avoid. It’s super disappointing it has that (fairly minor, but present) thread in it, because it’s excellent besides that. XP

@scoutfinch190 I can’t guarantee anything I recc will be clean, but as I’ve been stuck in the Webtoon hole for years, I think I should have some good ones up my sleeve. If you want ones without LGBT stuff then generally look for Korean ones, not international ones, cuz, well, you know. Anyways.

    • I love, love, love Ilkwon Ha’s comics. Annarasumanara, God of Bath, Duty After School, Taste of Illness are all great choices. Kind of strange, but honestly the best of the best.
    • SAMADHISchool Bus Graveyard, and The Savior’s Time are also among my favorites. SAMADHI is a really good superhero one, School Bus Graveyard is by a Christian author (and so is The Kiss Bet, now that I think about it), and The Savior’s Time just hits different.
    • My top one is probably The Masked Henchman. It’s a very cute superhero comedy on canvas, and probably the best thing I’ve ever read.

I think those are all the ones I really recommend. Hope you find something you like!
