Ian stared into his campfire’s crackling flames. His eyes drifted close, but he snapped them open. They closed again, and he opened them once more.

Close, open. Close, open. 

His head tilted forward as he nodded off. For a moment it looked as if he was going to fall into his campfire, but the sound of voices and horse hooves made him jerk upright. Ian pushed himself off the ground, peered through the brush separating him from the road, and tried to decide whether he should check it out or not. With a shrug, he resolved that he was near the road after all, so of course there’d be random travelers. He was just easing himself back onto the ground when he heard one of them say, “Looks like… a fire?”

He stiffened. If they were going to approach him, it’d be better if he made the first move, showing them he was not anyone shady. After all, it would make him uncomfortable to find a random guy hunched in the forest. He stood, a little warily, and pushed through the brush. “It’s just my campfire,” he said as he stopped in front of them. “Not a forest fire or anything.”
