J.A.Penrose started the topic Lesson 1 : Looking to Other Books in the forum Annual Theme Discussion 8 years ago
Yay! I get to start my Guildmastery with such an amazing group of people, and I can’t wait to see what you guys come up with over the year. *flails*
Okay, so, every Monday, I’ll be putting up a discussion or activity for you to do that will help you become better at our theme! Woot! Talk about Guildery Awesomeness!
As you know, the annual theme for Parimi Alca is Pacing and Suspense. (If you didn’t know that, just smile and nod, cos you know now.)
Brief description of Pacing and Suspense:
The choice of where you include information, how your plot is structured, where your super feelsey moments are, when you change POV, how you format your chapter/paragraph/sentence, and all of the things that make you keep turning the pages to see what happens next is called Pacing and Suspense.
My Personal Moment of Fangirling:
My favorite series when it comes to pacing and suspense is almost certainly The Mission League by Jill Williamson.
Every. Single. Chapter. Left me craving for me. You are left knowing just enough to understand, but then you lose that knowledge. NOTHING IS PREDICTABLE. However, this doesn’t make me stressed, just worried for the characters.
The way I could tell instantly that it was the pacing and suspense that made me love it so much, was because there was no way I was desperately routing for the main character. And, you aren’t meant to. By then end of the first book I kinda liked him, but gosh he has a slow character arc.
But the way Jill Williamson has set out the plot is fantastic. Each book answers some questions, and opens up a heap more, and she has managed to create suspense in a way that didn’t just use a fancy, mysterious prologue.
For me, The Mission League is the best example out there of pacing and suspense.
The Task:
Now for you guys. What stories do you know that are amazing with their pacing and suspense? (Please be spoiler sensitive!)
Also, if there are any issues, questions, or ideas regarding what we can look at during this topic, please comment on them and I’ll see if we can have a go at them during my Monday lessons.
