Kenma lay in a heap on the ground in the common area of the Nest, extremely grateful for oxygen. Miriam had told him to wait in there while she went to find Cade.

Kenma finally caught his breath, and couldn’t help it when he got up and started pacing. It was a quarter till midnight, and Rin ran a tight schedule.

There were only a few people hanging out in the common room, as most of them were getting ready for the meeting that Kenma was supposed to be preventing from happening, or helping out in the other rooms in the Nest, so nobody payed him much mind as he started to wear a rut in the already worn carpets.

    “Kenma?”

Kenma paused in his carpet destroying and turned toward the soft voice.

A young girl, no more than eight years old, stood in one of the doorways. It was Sunmi, Kenma and Rin’s unofficially adopted younger sister. She was clutching a sorry looking excuse for a stuffed rabbit and a worn umber-colored blanket to her chest as she stared at him with her unique amber/obsidian ombre eyes.

Kenma relaxed his posture and beckoned to Sunmi, opening his arms for a hug. “Hey there, Sun.” He said as the girl ran over to her older brother.

Sunmi pulled him into a tight hug. She was shaking slightly. Kenma noticed the tear tracks on her small, round face, and frowned. It was unlike Sunmi to cry.

    “What’s wrong, Sunshine?”

Sunmi shook her head. “Ian left a few days ago, and he still isn’t back.” She whispered, referring to the man who’d took Kenma and Rin in after the first fires, ten years ago, and who had then brought Sunmi into the family later on. “I’m really worried about him.”

Kenma’s heart hurt, and he fought back the urge to curl up in a ball with Sunmi and cry. Ian was like a father figure to the three of them. Unfortunately, the government had gotten an anonymous tip two days ago, and he’d been arrested and dragged away to the Tower of Punishment. There was no way to tell if he was okay, or… if he was even alive. Everyone had agreed not to tell Sunmi yet, but the eight year old was very intelligent for her age, and it was only a matter of time before she figured it out.

Kenma rubbed soothing circles on Sunmi’s back. “He’s going to be back soon.” Kenma lied. “He’s very strong, and I’m sure he’s fine. Please don’t worry too much, I need my smiley Sunshine back!”

Sunmi laughed a little and gave Kenma a watery smile.

    “That’s better.”

“Kenma!” Miriam walked back into the room, Cade following close behind her.

Kenma grimaced, anxiety returning full force. “Hey, Sun? I need you to go back to your room for a bit, okay? Go find Ahli and draw with her or something, alright?”

Sunmi nodded, her tiny face set with determination as she gave Kenma one last squeeze and ran off.

Kenma stood and brushed himself off as Cade and Miriam approached him. The setting was instantly tense.

“I have a message for you.” Kenma told them. “The government’s found the location of the Knot House, and are sending out a group of men right now to take us by surprise at the meeting. They don’t know about the Nest, so everyone’s safe, but we have to get everyone up there out now.”

    There you go!

    @everyone

Whew! That was a piece of work! I just had to bring in my character Sunmi, because she rounds out Kenma and Rin’s stories and characters so well and UWU *coughs aggressively* ahem. Please excuse that last bit.
