hi guys! It’s time for our next round of world building. Weather.

weather is actually a very important part of world building. Weather can almost be like its own character. Think about it. No story of London ever made it to press without talk of the constant fog and drizzle. The Boston Jane series is constantly referring to the rain in Shoalwater Bay, and any story that mentions Nebraska also goes on and on about the constant wind here.

So if you’re writing about a real place, definitely research the climate and weather patterns there and try to incorporate it into your story to give it a special sense of realness.

In fictional settings, we can take our liberties and use weather to directly effect the plot. For instance in my current fantasy spring and fall are the growing seasons because of the agreeable weather, while summer is plagued with torrential downpours. This means that when my MC burns the spring wheat fields, people go into a panic because they won’t be able to grow more until the fall. It also means he has to act fast to finish his plot before the summer rains make fast travel completely impossible.

what about you? How does weather effect your stories?
