Hi guys! So I guess I forgot to post this week, but here I am to continue our world building discussion.

Today I want to get into the history of your world.

In my opinion the history is one of the first things we should try to figure out, because without knowing where the world came from, it’s hard to say what it is now.

For instance, Panem wouldn’t make sense in the Hunger Games without the history of the war that destroyed everything, and then district 13’s rebellion. Those pieces of history were crucial to shaping the current world Katniss lives in.

This applies to writing contemporary also. In my hometown, the history is that it was settled by polish immigrants, the town was originally four miles away, and then the railroad came through and bypassed the original town so everyone moved to the new location.

That polish heritage colors everything in my life. The food we eat, the accents and languages that the people have, the last names we have, the grudges between certain families, etc.

now, it is history after all, it’s in the past, so as writers we don’t need to know every detail, and we certainly don’t want to include every detail in our stories, but having a decent idea of the major events that happened in your world’s past can definitely add flavor to the world your characters live in during the story.

What are some of the histories you guys have given to your world’s or settings?
