My two cents:
I think innocence and simplicity (like @corissa said) are important in order to keep the charm. But that balanced with continuity.
Continuity: my favorite subject in writing. Everything leads back to it. (evil grin emoji goes here. not even sure why XD)

The theme (like @msqueen8 was talking about) needs to be woven into the simple details, and everything needs to be crafted to reflect a central idea. That’s what I mean by continuity. Almost like you have your own little self-contained story-biosphere.
I think if you can achieve this, then the “enchanting mystery of the unknown” won’t feel random or forced.
For example, there is a hidden continuity between the Chronicles of Narnia books. Look up The Narnia Code to learn more about that.
