Okay guys, we’re now five days into this war and we need to make some decisions to move forward! *hands out lembas*
There have been lots of enthusiastic ideas thrown around and different opinions about what this should entail. It seems like the majority of those who have voiced their opinion want to go with a dream rather than a vision, and @ariella-newheart, @esjohnson, and @pursuewisdom all expressed interest in writing a draft. (Possibly working on it together?)
I think they were all agreeing to do a dream and not a vision (there is a difference), and I agree with @e-jo3 that a vision would be dangerous territory. Visions have supernatural significance and usually are messages from God, and with twenty people in the guild we likely will not be able to come to a consensus on the theology without offending someone. Or at the very least we would need a lot more time to prepare for it and make sure it was done carefully and Biblically.
I also agree with @e-jo3 that a dream, while fuzzy and has some random and obscure elements, can still have meaning. A dream can still have plot, characters, and theme as an undercurrent, with some superimposed weirdness on top of it that makes it dreamlike rather than a straightforward story.
Like @cassie-hartfinh said, there should be a flow to the story, and in order to make this interesting to read there needs to be a point, but this can definitely happen in a real dream. Have you ever had one of those nights where you wake up from a dream, think it was interesting, and fall back asleep and the dream continues? Did you notice that it can be the same story with the same overall characters and setting? But even though you recognize that you are still in the same place, it might look totally different. Or you may be aware that you are talking to the same person as before, but they don’t look like the same person anymore. For example, I could be in my house talking to my best friend, but suddenly I look at her and she looks like somebody I just met the other day. Yet somehow, I still know I’m talking to my best friend.
In dreams, there is also often a disconnect between events and the emotions experienced in response. Have you ever had a dream in which you felt an extremely exaggerated amount of fear that was totally out of proportion to the event that occurred? Or something absolutely horrific was occurring and you just nonchalantly walked by? These are other ways we can make it apparent that it’s a dream while the story is progressing.
@pursuewisdom Usually just one person writes the first draft, and anyone who wants to expand and edit is free to do so afterwards. You don’t need to include me in writing the draft, but I’ll definitely chip in and help edit once it’s posted on the doc. It would probably be best to brainstorm a little more here first (and wait for the okay from @j-a-penrose to go ahead and write it). 😀
