    I’ve been following this conversation for a while… 😉

May I jump in here and say a few words?

I agree with @the-fledgling-artist that Jesus fulfilled many of the Old Testament traditions.

A clarification I’d like to make is that God does not change, (He is the same yesterday, today, and forever), so it’s important to remember that the laws would have been fulfilled or clarified, not discarded altogether.

We no longer rely on works to get us to heaven, thanks to Jesus.  However, the Bible clearly states that faith, without works, is dead. (James 2:14-26) And that if we love God, we will keep His commandments.

In my opinion, the question is not which of the commandments have been discarded, but how the commandments should be obeyed differently.  For example, with regards to the sacrifice laws: Jesus did not “get rid of” the sacrifice laws.  A sacrifice is still required before we can get into heaven.  But He fulfilled the laws so that it is His sacrifice we need, and not our own.  (Of course, in order to accept His sacrifice we need to be willing to sacrifice ourselves to serving Him… 😉 )

Finally, when Jesus said the two greatest commandments are “Love the Lord your God” and “Love your neighbor as yourself,” He added the clause: “On these hang all the law and the prophets”.  I would argue that He didn’t mean those were the only two commandments, but that He meant all the laws come down to those two things.  If you go through all the OT laws, what can you find that does not either fulfill one or the other of those two “greatest commandments”?  As a couple of examples, the laws against stealing and coveting are obviously about loving your neighbor, the laws about how to worship and how to live cleanly and healthy lives are based on loving God, as we are temples for Him and made in His image.

Anyway…sorry for jumping in here.  Hope everyone’s okay with that.  If you’re not, just say so and I’ll jump right back out. 😛
