1. I noticed that Tolkien uses the atmosphere and the setting to tell more about the character in a way that isn’t just telling (if that makes sense).
2. I like that just about every other person on the quest is a character foil of Bilbo.
3. Also, the way that Tolkien switches into a tone of talking with the reader draws me in to the story even…[Read more]

@j-a-penrose I added something to the doc also. And I like your story, @jenwriter17 ! It’s an interesting situation and very realistic characters.
I’m not really sure what I was thinking with my choice in POV and tense… y’all will have to read it. 🙂

I’ll be editing a few poems I wrote a while ago, and stockpiling blog posts to schedule for this summer. Four is my goal for this week (I have them all outlined) and I have one finished and saved already!

@gabriellepollack Based on the generalized definitions of character arc, it’s a Shift/Growth Arc. And yeah, her firey-ness ends up getting her into quite a bit of trouble, as expected.

@gabriellepollack Her pride is mostly stemmed from her nature. She’s never been totally accepting of the imposed government and while she has to obey it in order to stay alive, she bristles at almost any confrontation.

My MC, Esla, has grown up being used to hard work and poverty, although her stubborn pride keeps her from considering herself, her brother, and her mother poor. She is quick-thinking when assessing situations, from a life of side-stepping the government and avoiding capture, but tends to be reckless and lets her emotions sway…[Read more]

Some recommendations:
Jeeves and Wooster by P.J. Wodehouse (or any of the Jeeves/Wooster books– they’re classics but so fun to read!)
The Cheveis Trilogy by Bryan M. Liftin

Everyone was wearing black. Shadowy, dark clothes to match shadowy, dark moods. Rory was bouncing on her heels. She yanked at a curly red pigtail and picked at the sleeve of her favorite green sweater and glanced at the others gathered around the wooden box, a faint smile twitching at the corners of her mouth. Why the tall man…[Read more]

Guildings, guildmates… I like both, but I tend to lean towards Guildmates more.
As for writing goals, I’m quite excited for a mission trip that will occupy from the end of June to the beginning of August for me, but I won’t have internet during that time. (Fair warning.) :/ Even so, I have a couple writing-related things I’d like to accomplish…[Read more]

@overcomer I am also voting for @morreafirebird ‘s story. Everyone’s was different in various ways, but to me hers stood out the most with a cohesive beginning, middle, and end.
