Nithel hadn’t quite realized he was vanishing until Alessio raced over and he reached for the youth’s hand. Nithel’s hand was like a mist. He was fading. The man’s heart dropped, and he looked stunned at his friend. Shaking his head slowly, I don’t want to leave you. I want to leave this accursed place. But not without you… Oh Alessio… But where his lips moved, no sound came.

Alessio’s words made his chest tremble, and he wanted to tell the youth ‘thank-you’, too. To tell him he would think of him for a long time, if not all time. Oh Alessio…

As tears filled his friend’s eyes, tears filled Nithel’s as well. My friend.

Even Alessio’s words began to fade, the walls too, like they were being covered with a fog, or a blank sheet of grayish-white. The last words of Alessio were like a whisper, or a dream, but they settled in his heart. Then Nithel had completely gone away.

He shook his head a few times, resting his hand on the frame of the door he’d just entered. Amit’s course voice cut through his ears and he glanced up, seeing the hoary-headed man, and blinking several times.

“Why are you standing around like a fool? Move, boy! You’re not here to-”

Nithel’s lips parted in shock, and he shook his head again, trying to clear it. Woe…
