@Beth20 Hi, I just joined a day or two ago, and am fishing around and trying to figure everything out. I’m really excited! I’m working on one fantasy novel right now. Basically there’s a shipwreck and four people end up on an island. Long story short they don’t get rescued (?perhaps at the end though???). They find out, (I’m not quite sure when yet), that the island is being run by an evil (not mad) scientist. He is a thoughtful, smart dictator who has enslaved the people of the island. He makes them work, serve him, and he regularly goes on ‘reapings’, for lack of a better word, to kidnap people for experiments. There are giant (genetically tampered with) mushrooms, hydras, paramecium, amoeba, cilia, viruses, and volvox (to name a few). The island is circular and divided into four quadrants. Quadrant 1 has only positive people who turn a blind eye to their troubles, and are always laughing. Quadrants 2 and 3 are ordinary people half negative half positive in their lives, but grating underneath the tyranny (and about half choosing to go against him). And quadrant 3 has only negative people who are actively trying to destroy the dictator, but also some despair of fighting and are useless. (:

Yah!! So glad you joined!! Love the premise of your story, sounds very interesting!! If you have any questions about how the site works just ask!! Also we need to persuade Carter and Synjon to join!!
Yes! and thank you!
Halloa! Welcome to SE! I’m Livi, and I write fantasy, a bit of sci-fi, and some poems 🙂 I also enjoy playing the violin, mandolin, and piano. (Just as a small introduction 😀 )
Ooh!! Your novel sounds awesome!! I love the idea of the different quadrants with the different views. Glass half empty, glass half full, glass of water. Nice. 😀 And the mushrooms and whatnot sound awesome.
A couple questions I had while reading your synopsis (that don’t necessarily have to be IN the synopsis, but as a reader, these are things I wonder when I pick up the book to read it): What does the scientist want? Does he just want to live his life on the island, studying and experimenting on things, or does he want to expand his “region” to other places, or does he want to get something specific from his studies and experiments? So basically what’s his goal. And then how do the people of the island and different quadrants react to and interact with the four people who were shipwrecked?
So like I said, you don’t have to answer those, but maybe think about them as you keep writing 🙂
(And I’m not sure if you needed/wanted suggestions anyways lol but those are some things I thought of that might be helpful.)
Anyway, welcome (again), and if you have any questions or anything, feel free to tag me! And definitely tag me if you end up posting any snippets of your novel 😀 I’d love to read it!
@anne_the_noob14
Thank you Livi! Yes, good questions. I already know some of the answers to them about the book (Great questions and thank you for asking them!).
The scientist, he’s not looking for world domination. He was rejected in his scientific community when he published his ideas and set out to prove them. He is bitter inside because of that and other things (not sure what things yet). He’s not a nice guy, but, as I said, very smart. (He might be being paid by someone for his research.) He looks like an everyday person you’d pass on the street. Except dark hair and dark eyes. He has charm when he wants to, but rarely does. He’s in his late 30s to mid-40s. (I might need to make him older.)
The indigenous people? Different tribes respond differently to new people. The castaways land in quadrant four. At first the natives are suspicious, but then they take them back to their village and feed them. They know basic English because the dictator speaks it, (and another castaway that has been on the island for years does as well). This other castaway has learned their language and ways. His permanent residence is in quadrant 3.
Sorry, that was an information dump. (:
My mom’s learning how to play the violin, and I play the piano. Thanks for saying hello!
Ahh, I see! Cool. *nodnod*
XD You’re good! I tend to info dump, myself, lol
