@daeus-lamb okay so you basically hit every note already, so I’m just going to drop a random list of randomness.

Ways the past can affect the present in your novel:

    • The present springs from the past, as Daeus said
    • People forget the past, which can lead to:
    • Misconceptions about the past, and thus mistaken solutions for problems in the present
    • Downright loss of memories from the past, resulting in aimlessness, apathy, and directionless despair
    • Disagreements about the past: See evolution vs creation; Jesus as fully God and man vs Jesus as ‘a good teacher’
    • People and people groups can be fiercely protective of their heritage, leading to:
    • War over borders, landmarks, resources, and even famous men (Macedonia claims to be the birthplace of Alexander the Great, but for centuries bordering countries have disputed it to the point where Macedonia can literally use that claim as a political lever and bargaining chip. No joke.)
    • Traditions, festivals, commemorations, and monuments that become symbols of patriotism and solidarity
    • Racism, nationalism, and other forms of unhealthy political extremes resulting from blind devotion to a thing rather than whatever ideology made the thing great
    • Grudges over old grievances kept alive long after they should have died away

And stuff. *pants for breath* 😛

@noahlitle @chalice @eden-anderson @sesi @literatureforthelight can you think of any instances of these in novels, your novels, or in the world at large?
