@j-a-penrose The UK English definition of prose includes lack of metre, but maybe it’s different in different countries.
Just wanted to make sure 🙂

Just a quick question. Will a song count as unique prose, since it technically isn’t prose? If not, we might be better leaving it out.

F.C. Tait replied to the topic {2018 – Week 15} Why Everyone Should Read Their Old Writing in the forum Annual Theme Discussion 7 years, 10 months ago
I look back at my old writing quite often, and it doesn’t make me cringe anymore. Don’t know what changed. I still notice all the mistakes, but I know how much better I am so it doesn’t upset me at all. Sometimes it makes me laugh, though 😀

Here’s a thought: Do you think a unique situation will help inspire us to write unique prose, or would a really ordinary situation make it stand out more?

F.C. Tait replied to the topic Introduce your CHARACTERS! in the forum Meraki Writing Discussions 7 years, 10 months ago
@jane-maree Thanks! Naming characters has actually been one of my biggest struggles with this project, so I’m glad some of them turned out well.
I did plan them to kind of develop in reverse to each other, if that makes sense. Because they’re siblings and spend most of the story together, they encounter most the same situations but respond in…[Read more]

@jane-maree “Stand out like a potato in a minefield” haha that’s some unique prose right there!
Right, let’s do this! What’s everyone’s preferred genre? Mine’s fantasy, but then mine’s always fantasy 🙂

Everyone’s characters sound really interesting!
I’ll pick Suri, the MC and one of the narrators of my story Sharpened Blade. She’s human but lives in a dark-elven city -and is actually a spy for the light-elves. She’s generally sweet and doesn’t like to hurt other people, so she hates being a spy but (for reasons I’ll not go into here) feels s…[Read more]

@jane-maree People actually like that film?!
*coughs* Oh, I mean, different opinions are interesting, aren’t they? 😛

@e-b-raulands Those are some good points about Rey’s development.
I don’t know, there’s been a lot of talk about how The Last Jedi “betrayed the franchise” or whatever, which to me sounds like people are upset with the original ideas rather than the rehashed ones? I don’t know.
The film does have flaws but I think there’s a lot of good in it. Or…[Read more]

Oh, and I wanted to know who Snoke was and see him do something really scary. A smaller issue, but still one that irritated me.

So many people say Rey is perfect but I just don’t get that? She believes everything she’s told, literally every single thing regardless of where it comes from. She goes straight to the dark side for answers. She confides in Kylo Ren despite the fact that he’s obviously evil and she’s both witnessed and experienced that…[Read more]

@scarletimmortalized The current writing advice (which is constantly changing but I actually agree with this time) is to use “invisible” dialogue tags. Readers won’t read “asked, asked, asked”, or the same with “said”. Instead, they take in who’s talking and skip over the verb without really registering it, if that makes sense. You’ll probably…[Read more]

Hmm. I might have to think about leaving.
You’ve all been great. My problem is just that the time I spend (or should spend) on the writing exercises comes out of my writing time without contributing anything to my projects. With university starting up again, I’ll have less writing time so I’m not sure if doing lessons and exercises is the best…[Read more]

@jane-maree I love K.M. Weiland’s books so I’ll definitely check out her website! 😉
Undoubtedly the best writing resource I’ve ever come across is 5 Editors Tackle the 12 Fatal Flaws of Fiction Writing by C.S. Lakin. 🙂
