“oh um…” Lance blushed. “No I’m Lance Fires. Like, first name is Lance, last name is Fires.” And… he’d forgotten to speak slowly. Ugh. “I. mean. I’m. Lance. Just. Lance.”

Well… Lance wasn’t getting out of this coffee shop any time soon, coffee-stained undershirt or no.
“My. name. is. Lance. Fires,” he said at a probably insultingly slow pace. “What. is. your. name?” Oh yeah, dumb. Smart. Nevermind. “Yes. I. will. help. you. find. a. pen. And. Paper.”
Lance looked around the shop. There were napkins…[Read more]

No, I’ve never fought a Dunie. We’ve had a ceasefire ever since I enlisted. They’re crazy though. Tough men with razor sharp senses and a hard edge from surviving in the Dunes for generations. I’ve only talked to a few… I’ve heard of people going Cold Crazy, but I think the Dunies have something going on in the desert too if you know what I mean.

HEY GUYS!
IT’S WORD WAR WEEK! We’ve got to go out there and squeeeeeeeeeeze out every last word to defend our title. SO whenever you guys get a free moment between now and Sunday night, jot down a few words and keep track of your score. I’ll gather them all up at the end of the month and hopefully we’ll have a number that’s higher than I can…[Read more]

Hey!
Just popping in to say that @daeus-lamb is old.
Also, welcome @theinconceivable1! Don’t get discouraged about over-assessing yourself. It’s really important that you get a good idea for where you are (even if it’s lower than you thought) and now you can build yourself back into the intermediate/advanced area! What is you next step for…[Read more]

Yeah, I mean I guess they’re human. Sometimes they act more like monsters but… yeah they’re at least mostly human.
And yes, I am. I’m in charge of the SMRU, we’re a quasi-military unit stationed in Sandfield focused on stabilizing and rebuilding. Like… literally stabilizing and rebuilding buildings.
Um… no, I don’t dr…[Read more]

Lance watched the girl steal the paper, scribble down a note (with exceptional speed) and set it down on the table. Now what, was he supposed to wait for his receipt back? He didn’t needed it, maybe he should just go he… Lance read the note. Oh great, the girl was practically dumb. Not like… dumb like no… actually she couldn’t tal…[Read more]

Hey @graceabounds2129, thanks for poking in to ask:
1) Generally speaking, it takes a little bit of imagination and suspension of disbelief to get a character lounge together. If everyone created a lounge that suited their character’s time and place, then we’d have a lounge for each Lumenite and that’s not what we’re going for. So, generally, w…[Read more]

Lance blinked and stuttered. “Oh.. I uh… sorry I didn’t mean to be nosy.” Earth and stars, he needed to put it together. Dripping jacket over one shoulder, Lance swung around to face the girl who’d tugged on his sleeve. “um… uh… I don’t have any…” Lance set his cup down dug through is pocket to find his receipt, and handed it over to…[Read more]

@wordsmith Biggest fear? Well I mean what if it happens again? What if the Dunies get back at Sandfield or Hitchens or Sunset? That… yeah we have to make sure that doesn’t happen.
@scribbles I mean yeah sure, but it’s not like I need hugs or something. I’m an adult and everything. But like yeah if I wanted one just for you know whate…[Read more]

If your story features more than one character, it probably contains dialogue. Unfortunately, dialogue can be challenging to write because it needs to sound natural or it will fall flat. As if that isn’t bad n […]

Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it!

I love learning about dialogue, and mine needs some work. 🙂 Great article!

I hope this helps. It’s so hard to teach because it’s so relative and character based and all that jazz. Good luck going forward!

This article makes me happy. 😀 Yay mechanics! Yay character-building! These are super helpful reminders. Thanks, Brandon!

Wow!! Great post!! Thanks for writing!!!

Thank you for writing this. I really struggle with creating compelling and real dialogue, and I am very grateful that you posted this. I think what you said about the long, inspiring speeches being unnatural is something I have trouble with, and I am glad you addressed that issue. I’m looking forward to trying out dialogue again – and reading it out loud to see if it sounds okay.

Ah… the long, inspiring speech. Ever my nemesis. Good luck going forward!

I mean… yeah sure. When I’m helping I’m… helping. I can’t fix it all but getting my hands dirty helping just a little… that much is my duty. I don’t know if it makes me more confident, but it really does remove all the distractions.

Hey Emmit, where do you slink away too when nobody’s watching, and why are you so confident that nobody could follow you? Also, what’s up with all the blackness? Is it just your soul showing through?
