Melian shook her head, strawberry-blonde hair thwacking Lagoron’s chin. “No, I can’t show you,” she said, a frown in her voice. “Mr. Alva said that–that they died… And that I’ll never see Mommy again!” She twisted around and buried her face in the Lagoron’s shirt. He tensed, unsure what to do as a sob bubbled up from her chest.  Then, just as quickly, she sat upright again, wiping her nose on her sleeve, and glared at Lagoron. “You smell like horses.”

Lagoron stifled a laugh. He hadn’t been around very many young elves, but he was thinking he should have.

Melian turned back around to look at the others. “So, no,” she said, shaking her head again. “I can’t take you to it because it’s gone now. All gone.” A hiccupped maimed the last word, and she rubbed her hands across her tear-stained cheeks furiously.

Lagoron exchanged a glance with Holly, who was frowning in sympathy and perhaps anger. “Why would he do that?” she asked.

Nora rode up on Lagoron’s other side and nodded her head in Melian’s direction. Catching on, Lagoron lifted her off of Radiance’s bare back (because honestly, I would think that elves ride bareback) and handed her off to Nora, who immediately began to make soothing shushing sounds. One has heart of gold and smile strong. How true.

“Hang on, what’s that?” Jason asked, pulling on his horse’s reins and leaning back in the saddle. “Looks like… a fire?”

A little unsure what should happen next. Maybe a forest fire, or a campfire, or just a random fire in the middle of nowhere with a certain third poem by it or something?
