Melian furrowed her brow as she shook her head. “No, I can’t show you,” she said, her frown deepening. “Mr. Avla (was that the name, and what would she call him?) said that–that they died… And that I’ll never see Mommy again!” The little girl buried her face in the male elf’s shirt and allowed another sob to bubble up from her chest.  Then she sat up again, swiped her sleeve across her nose, which she scrunched up. “You smell like horses,” she told Lagoron.

Melian twisted around to see the other people. “So, no,” she said, shaking her head. “I can’t take you to it because it’s gone now. All gone.” She hiccuped the last word, still wiping her tear-streaked cheeks.
