Gerik stepped outside. “This w–”

A sharp gunshot rang out through the night, slicing off Gerik’s words.

Rob swung towards it, his nostrils flared and his chest pumping as his protective instincts kicked into high gear.

At the same moment, Gerik slipped into the shadows and vanished.

What is he up to? He’d better watch it. Rob though as he sprinted after him. Redrawing his .45 with a swift, well-practiced motion, he muttered, “Depending on what’s going on, I might need you soon.”

His other hand grabbed his left collar. “Meredith-” he stopped.

When will I ever remember?? Grunting in disgust, he hurried after Gerik.

Gerik led him a short way, then stopped as the street met an alleyway. Rob closed in behind him and glanced across the street.

Crowded in the alley were two men with guns, a young woman with a backpack, and a young guy laying on the ground, obviously wounded. Probably got shot in the leg.

Rob narrowed his eyes as he studied the group. The one man with the gun and the young woman with the backpack had their backs to him, but the other man stood facing their direction, the moonlight illuminating him and his uniform like someone was shining a spotlight on him.

He’s wearing a mockingbird! Rob tensed. His gun hand clenched the grip. Government agents.

Gerik turned back towards him. Even in the dark, Rob could see his eyes were narrow slits.

“Do they have one of our sparrows?” Rob asked in a low tone.
