(Enn Dera is the teacher)

The next day at school, Dari and I walked in to cheerful chaos. Kiet met us with a grin.
“Saya’s having kittens!” he said.
The tabby was curled behind the Deras’ bookshelf. Two kittens, each half the size of a fist, already lay beside her.
“Kiet, come on, now,” Enn Dera laughed. “We need to get some work done today.”
Kiet let out a rueful sigh, but smiled and slid into a seat. As we worked, his eyes kept sliding over to the cat. In the middle of a math problem, his eyebrows furrowed, and he stood up.
“Something’s the matter,” he said, kneeling down beside the bookcase. Saya was licking a kitten repeatedly, but the creature never stirred. Enn Dera sighed and glanced over.
“It looks like that one didn’t make it,” he said. Kiet bit his lip. “Happens sometimes. Sorry, Kiet. I know how you like them.”
Kiet wasn’t listening. Giving the mother cat a comforting pet on the forehead, he took the motionless kitten into his hands and rubbed it gently.
After a few minutes of silence, Enn Dera shook his head. “Kiet, I’m sorry, but it’s gone. We need to move on.”
Suddenly, the kitten’s head twitched. A grin broke out on Kiet’s face as its tiny form expanded with a breath. Setting the kitten back down beside its mother, he wiped his hands on his tunic and gave Enn Dera a triumphant smile as he sat back down.
Enn Dera nodded at him and glanced back at the cat with a peculiar look on his face. Then he turned back to the books. “Anyone finished with that problem yet?”

And later, when he owns the kitten:

Kiet’s kitten, christened Meya, spend most of her time in the boy’s lap when classes were in session. She seemed to know who it was that had saved her life, and both cat and boy delighted in the arrangement.
I managed to get over my dislike of cats enough to take to Meya. Unlike some cats, she seemed to have a guileless attitude. She was much like her owner in that way, I thought, stroking her forehead.

Weird that I made my MC dislike cats 😛
