  • I, David started the topic A (Short) Story Of Mine in the forum Knaphollow Writing Discussions 7 years, 3 months ago

So I recently finished a 4 part, (very) short story. I invested a fair amount of time and emotion into it, and I think it turned out alright. I’ll post the first part here. Read it if you want, and if you do, please let me know what you think and how it made you feel. All comments and critiques are appreciated, good and bad alike.

    So yeah. Without further ado, here’s M—- H— M- T——

    Maybe

The slow breeze stroked my face as I lay beneath the open sky. It whispered to the trees and grass all around me, stirring them into gentle agitation. I rested among the waving grass, body relaxed, arms crossed, eyes closed.
It was peaceful. And that was what I wanted.
There was a sudden increase of rustling as someone walked up and quietly proceeded to lay down on my right. I knew without looking who it was.
“I thought I’d find you here,” she said. Her voice was kind and soft, but I couldn’t help but think I heard a bitter edge in her words. Perhaps I was just imagining it.
“You know me too well,” I replied.
“Well, let’s just say I’m returning the favor.” I could almost hear her smile.
    “Why are you here?”
    “Maybe I missed you.”
    “I don’t believe that.”
“No. You don’t. But then, you don’t know what you believe.”
I gave no acknowledgment to the statement. “Why are you here?” I asked again.
“Does there have to be a reason?”
“After what happened, yes. There has to be a reason.”
“Maybe I just wanted to see you.”

    “Did you?”

“Maybe. But maybe I didn’t. Maybe I don’t. For better or for worse, you can’t know what I think of you now. Maybe you’ll never know. But you know what?”

    “What?”

“Maybe it’s time you learned to move on.”
I opened my eyes and looked over. No one was around. There was nothing but an imprint in the grass, an impression of someone who had never even been there.

But if they had never been there, why did I miss them so much?
