Hey, guys! I’m here! Sorry I’m so late.

Okay, so I kind of dismissed this thread, because I’m not really a world builder (sorry, @daeus-lamb). But just today I realized how this topic applies to my own writing (and my aversion to world building).

I was watching some Like Stories Of Old videos from YouTube (check him out here, like, seriously @kate @eden-anderson he has a two part video on LOTR), he talks about what stories really mean, and I realized how important the past is on a character level.

Check it out: Inception. Interstellar. Arrival. Signs (even though it’s not very good). All of these stories have protagonists that have a tragic and/or painful past (with a wink to those of you who know which of these stories is not quite like the others ;-). All of these are thought provoking stories, and the emotional charge they have comes from the characters’ pasts.

I just thought I would point this out as (with the exception of Signs) these are the kind of stories I want to tell. I just hadn’t realized how important a character’s past is to their character arc. As I tend to skip over the past to get to the “real” story.

So, all that to say, I still don’t want to come up with history for my story worlds, but at least I’m excited about coming up with backstories for my characters. XD
