@obrian-of-the-surface-world Nice snippet! I love the feeling of confusion that’s invoked by it. Good thoughts there, too!

However, I think it seems more like the half-consciousness and confusion of a person who is waking up after trauma or when the effects of medication are wearing off, rather than an actual dream that would take place during REM. That was my immediate thought as to what was happening when I first read it, but that being said, I’ve never had that experience. Can anyone else testify to that?

@j-a-penrose Should have stuck with being a Master Jedi, eh? Now you get to experience the joys of being killed by your own apprentice. 😛

Wait, does this mean we’re Siths too? Oh dear. I guess you’ll have to start calling me ‘Darth Pen’.

    EVERYONE, I have an idea!

We could choose an experience that would end in the character having to make a difficult decision. This would be what happened before the character went to bed, and his last thoughts before falling asleep would be about the decision he has to make. He would be torn between two or more options and be struggling over them as he drifted into restless sleep.

This is where we’d start the story. The dream could be partially a recount of what happened, but exaggerated and warped in parts based on his brain’s interpretation of the situation, and partially reflecting his fears of what could happen based on his decisions. With the recount parts, we would be hinting at the experience and cause the reader to guess about what happened (then maybe reveal the last necessary information when he wakes up at the end). With the other parts that reflect his fears, we could use symbolism and foils to show what would happen for either choice. It could end with him waking up and making a decision about the choice.

So it’d be kind of a cross between a vision and a replay of the past, and it would have plenty of opportunities for symbolism and the weird elements that would make it a relateable dream.

    Thoughts?
