Okay so question number 1#:
How do you know if you are a writer? (it sounds really simplistic, I know)
I’ve struggled with this for a LONG time. First off, there’s like one hundred and one views out there about what makes a writer. I’ve heard and read lots of conflicting views about this: some people say anybody can be a writer, others say it’s fate, you either have the gift of writing or you don’t, it’s planned before you’re even born. Then there are other people who say that you can learn to be a writer but you have to fit a certain list of requirements. What are you supposed to believe?
Secondly, I’ve grown up with the belief that I was stupid. So, lots of times I’m all excited about writing and then I hit a bump in the road, and I get all down and discouraged and all these negative thoughts come: “You’ll never be smart enough to write anything good.” and “How on earth did you think you could ever be a writer, you’ll never be able to understand the most basic things about writing.” and “You totally fail at this.”
And then I believe that other people think this about me, that I fail at everything I do (not just writing)…and then I want to prove to them that I’m not crapp, that I’m worth something, that I can do this, I can write something worth reading, I have something to give to the world. (yes, I know I have problems…*sigh*)
Anyway, from that mindset arises a new problem…am I actually writing because I have a story to tell, because I love to write or is this just all about trying to prove myself?
Any words of wisdom?? I’d really appreciate it, because I’m really struggling with this right now and it’s hurting my writing life. (If I’m totally off my rocker, just say so…)
