“You wish to know of the Star Breather?” She asked quickly. Maybe he said something wrong again, Alessio looked up but it was eagerness, not impatience. Her eyes shone and it made her look like she was really aglow. But not like Arsene, he radiated with impishness.
“I’ll tell you what I know! And answer the questions I can.” She said, she actually said yes! Not that he really thought she’d say no just…it was terrifying to ask for anything, he was relieved she didn’t seem upset with it.
“Alright,” Arsene sighed, bursting with mischief all the same. Or maybe just something about the robber’s cheerfulness was just innately sus. “What needs to be done?”
Big Softie slipped in and was taking in the whole situation now.
“Is there anything that is needed?” He asked,
“Yes, Mr. Gray Softie,” Arsene interjected before Alessio could say anything. “I’m sure there’s something to do around here. Just ask Mrs. Leana. She seems to have taken over the kitchen now.”
She didn’t ‘take over’ the kitchen, she just… He was thinking ‘made it more effective’ but that somewhat did involve taking over the kitchen…
Big Softie gave a martyr’s sigh. “What is required here?”
“I don’t have to call you Saeb Lyn. If they’re going to torment you, so.” Leana said, deflating a little as she looked over, well, them. Yeah…they were not the most polite or refined group. In fact one might go so far as to say they were some of the most chaotically gruff disorganized people to ever use the very fringes of sanity as a bungy rope.
“I would be most grateful.” Sir Sca – uh, Sir…? said in an almost painfully relieved voice. He could be polite? Alessio stared at him intently (completely oblivious to the fact that it’s rude to stare).
“Come and sit in a circle. Everyone gets a pan.” She said like someone with now-lowered expectations for what would be possible with her resources. Alessio mutely complied, trying to figure out what he was supposed to call Big Softie/Sir Scary now?
“It doesn’t have to taste good. It just has to be edible, and enough to keep us from starving.” That much Alessio could do, he felt a little better about that. “We’re not putting in leavening, because that will just take up more space.”
That sounded sensible, he knew how to make bread fairly well, and he’d just have to follow her directions, right?
But now that Sir Scary was nice, Alessio had many questions. Like, why did he always wear a mask even after everyone else seemed to have dropped or left their masks. And, how old was he? He was closed off and formal but not unkind like…Alessio’s big brother. And he seemed done with the idea of killing Alessio had he ever assassinated someone before, maybe he was just a soldi -?
“Is there something wrong?” Big Softie was looking at him when he said that. Whoops.
“What am I supposed to call you now?” Alessio asked while he was already in trouble anyway. Now that it was on his mind, Alessio started to realize how little he knew about how to be polite. “Uh…no offense.”
That was awkward.
He was usually more polite to people he didn’t like because they’d hurt him if he was honest. Why was acting proper so hard? How was Leana so good at being polite and being kind? It wasn’t fair!
So, I think everyone remembering the times they were betrayed AND times they betrayed someone is good. PLUS being forced into a situation where they have to make the choice and experience it again. Lots of drama and angst character development there.Ooooh I like thisss!!
I say numbers 1 (1-3) and 5 are my favorites!
