“You misunderstand, Alessio.” The stranger responded. Alessio narrowed his eyes at him. “He will expect you at the Trial of Fear and Cowardice as soon as you are ready. This city is merely a refuge to resupply and continue.”

Trial of Fear and Cowardice? Alessio’s jaw tightened, he twisted the knife still his in hand. No trails he was done with trails, he’d stab anyone who got close enough to hurt him. His heart was slamming into his chest at an alarming rate, he wasn’t going back to any sort of “trial”. He’d been called a coward his whole life he could live with that, he’d stab anyone who got close but he was not going through any more trials.

“Refuge for what?” – Alessio flinched, darting a glance at the voice behind him. Just Sir Scary, he didn’t need to be getting so jumpy, he’d make more mistakes that way.

“Please seat yourselves and I will explain everything you need to know.” Continued the stranger.

Warily, Sir Scary complied but Alessio stood defiantly, slipping his back in a pocket and feeling for his bow.

All the lights blew out. Devils. Lights flared out into a large sphere above the stairs.

“This planet represents the world you are in.” The image changed again to 4 more planets. “The four other planets represent your home world. Through his powers, Lord Amnesia has linked your worlds with his to test you.”

The Earth Theory. It was popular scientific theory in Casumbra – ok more of a conspiracy theory that their world was connected to nine different worlds which each reflected an aspect of a “Mother World” ; Earth. It said that each world was a Dimension of Earth.

It was also Alessio’s pet conspiracy-theory as a kid.

That was kind’ve cool – terrifying, but cool.

“These mirrors act as doors to the trials. Touch them and you enter a trial.” So this is what I’m not touching.

“Once you complete all the trials, you will enter Amnesia’s castle. What happens when you arrive is Amnesia’s decision.”

“And what if I just stay here and don’t do anything about the devil-blasted mirrors?” Alessio asked stubbornly

“Then you will die and be reborn into a trial. If you die more than seven times, you will be forever trapped inside the trail you failed.”

Alessio bit his lip. He needed to find the best course of action. He seriously doubted Amnesia would let them go even if they did pass the mirrors but if he pretended to go along he might get close enough to kill Amnesia before it was too late. He’d never killed anyone before, maybe there’d be a better option when the time came.

He was biting his knuckles again, he really needed to break that bad thinking habit.

Then there was the issue of whether or not each of them had to enter a trial individually or if they could work together?

Alessio decided to address the one issue he could do something about now. He turned to Sir Scary.

“Are you still going to kill me when this is over?” He said, just to have one definite answer.
