“C- Lexia”, Avery tried to choke out a warning before Calexia rushed to him and pulled him to his feet.

“Are you okay?” Calexia frowned at the dark scratches twisting down his arms.

Avery grimaced in reply, pushing past her to scan the area for the creature. It was gone. He exhaled and let himself sink against a tree. He knew they couldn’t stay here long, but even after he stopped shaking from adrenalin he couldn’t bring himself to start trudging down the mountain again.

“I’m sorry, Calexia.”

“For what?”

Avery laughed, though he hadn’t meant to. “For all of this. I’ve been trying and trying, but I can’t stop it. I can’t save you, and I can’t save myself. Thank the highest that Jake isn’t here, because I surely wouldn’t be able to save him either.” Avery tugged what was left of his sleeve down over the scratches on his arm. The onyx gashes were deeper than he’d realized.
