@chalice Thanks for getting a discussion started! That’s a great question.
I think my thoughts are all pretty close to Sarah’s. I personally am less attracted to making that kind of art, and I probably even prefer the look of more stylized art, but I don’t think hyper-realism is any less artistic than any other artwork. I’m my opinion they do have a major difference, but creativity has little to do with that difference. In my mind, I kind of separate them into two categories, because in my mind, they serve two different functions of storytelling (that are both equally important and artistic) I think hyperrealism is closer to Gallery type artwork and more stylized is generally used for communicating a story.
Like, I think Gallery type artwork is communicating its story in one single image, and so you can spend a lot more time on it, but if you were to animate, or even do a comic with artwork that detailed, it would take more than a lifetime. Stylization is cutting back on detail in a way that’s still appealing, and it’s necessary for stories that require more than one image. I prefer the latter means of storytelling, and so I prefer the latter type of artwork. But then just because I’m less attracted to that type of artwork I often value it less, which I’m sure is wrong.
For me, hyperrealism is impressive, but stylized artwork is more inspiring to me personally, because it forces me to look at the world differently. It just feels inherently more inspiring, but even though I’m more drawn to stylized artwork, I know there are probably people out there who are drawn more to realism. I’d be so interested in asking someone like that to explain why realism fires them up more than stylized art.@h-jones @lin @april-j-rhys @theclumbsy_lamplighter @ellaofminecraft @ncstokes
