“Meg, this place looks like a crime scene,” I muttered, trotting to catch up with her.

She grinned at me over her shoulder as she pounded up the steps. “Right up your alley then, hey Detective Ginger Everett?”

I paused at the bottom step, poking at it suspiciously with my foot, and chuckled. “And I suppose you see it as some dark lord’s abandoned fortress, oh Nutmeg Everett, the great wizard?”

Meg winked at me as she raddled the door latch until it came loose. “Aye, Detective Ginger. We must proceed with caution.” She lowered her voice to a whisper. “The ghosts of his servants may still lurk inside.” Then, drawing an imaginary sword from her belt, she prodded the door open with her foot, tugged her hood over her head, and ducked inside.

I raised my eyebrows. “Ghosts indeed.” If there had been a few more spiderwebs, and the pot of drooping daisies on the step had been replaced by a ragged black cloth, the resort would have made a convincing haunted house.
