*nods in agreement* Misplaced chapter breaks are definitely a huge suspense destroyer. I have noticed that a lot of writers use chapter breaks for a dramatic pause rather than simply starting a new paragraph. I’ve done it myself. However, the technique of an abrupt paragraph break is much more powerful (when it’s not overused) because it doesn’t interrupt the flow of the story.

Another note on POV switches: one thing that really pulls me along in a book is when I’m dying to know something about a character, but there are chapters and chapters before I can return to their POV. When I read The Warden and the Wolf King, for the whole first part of the book I was longing to know what happened to Artham, but when I finally got there, I was suddenly dying to know what would happen to the Jewels. I ended up being so anxious for them that I just HAD to get to the end of the book NOW so I would know what happened to all of them. xD When an author switches between POVs in every chapter, he looses that effect.

Thanks, @j-a-penrose! The lesson was more than decent 😉
