@j-a-penrose Haha, well a few weeks ago I was getting really frustrated because I couldn’t figure out what Terut’s backstory was. I started arguing with him, and then somehow he ended up telling me where he came from and all his motivations and the fact that he is Loya’s brother. I had no idea that was coming! It was very, very weird.

@coggleton I definitely understand your issues with the first option…I’ve had the same problems. Maybe if you did the second, you could hint at Cadmen having some weird backstory. Maybe he’s afraid to use his gear/powers and doesn’t help the protagonist when he most needs it, so then the protagonist would have to push on by himself. It would be an interesting way to twist the mentor cliche and raise questions about Cadmen that you could answer in a later book. By the way, Zalal is a really cool name for a villain. I like it 🙂

@conscious-dreamer WOW. Those both sound great! Bravo for writing those intriguing blurbs…that’s something I’m really horrible at.

@evelyn Yup! Gotta love those random sentences! Titles are tough, but fun once you get the hang of them 😉 I like to chose titles that have a sort of double meaning, especially if one meaning alludes to the plot conflict and the other alludes to the internal conflict. For example, with my last book Forgiving Footprints, the title came from the plot conflict of the footprints found on the farm, Ginger’s internal struggle to forgive the past (footprints being symbolic of that), and from one moment where Paddler’s footprint left from a tragic event convinced Ginger to forgive him. It took me two years to come up with that title 😛 Or for a real book example, The Monster in the Hollows could refer to the cloven (a plot conflict) or one of the characters (*tries to be vague*) and his fear of becoming a monster.

Anyway, that’s my method. Sometimes it’s easier to come up with one when you’re finished, but it’s definitely  nice to have one right away.
