It’s hard to believe that July is frosty anywhere in the world. Over here it’s hot and humid enough to steam broccoli on the sidewalk. 😛
The car crawled up the driveway, groaning in relief when it stopped after the last inch of our drive. I dragged myself from the car, glaring wearily at the sun that dared make me so miserable. As I slumped up the driveway, wiping a hand across my brow, my gaze rested on the porch steps. All trace of tiredness left me. I screeched.
They had come.
I sprang forward with a cry, scrambled towards the door, and snatched up the boxes on the step. With a triumphant grin I flew through the door, dumped my things on a chair, and ran for the scissors. I rubbed my sweaty hands together gleefully and snipped away. As the last bit of tape gave way I tossed the scissors to the side and dove into the box. At last!
My fingertips brushed against the warm cover of a book and I drew them out, clutching them to my chest. I swept up the stairs in a trance, ignoring the blast of steaming air that greeted me at my bedroom door. Collapsing on my bed, I held one in front of my face, blowing a stray damp wisp of hair out of my face. My fingers tingled as I opened the cover, a scent of adventure pouring from the pages. I took a deep breath, my heart trembling the way it always did when I opened a book I hadn’t read before, turned one more page, and became lost in another world.
