Just an idea for the second ship. In the Revolutionary War, John Paul Jones captured the HMS Serapis at the loss of the USS Bon Homme Richard. Both ships were heavily damaged in the battle. (The Bon Homme Richard later sank on its way to port.) The Rose de la Reine could have a similar encounter with the second ship. That would be a simple way to explain its damage and, too a degree, a reason to continue use of a damaged ship.
