    @noah-cochran

Nice. Are gambeson’s as comfortable as they are purported to be?

    I wouldn’t know, I’m a beginner, I don’t have one XD I just have a fencing mask and gloves.

(We’re organized into two main groups, beginners and recruits, with recruits being the senior and allowed to fight with steel. There are far more recruits than beginners in our group, I only fought recruits that night.)

Theoretically, from what I’ve seen, yes. It takes a while to put on full gear, (gambeson, chest protector, mask, gloves, elbow protector, knee protector.) maybe about ten minutes, but nobody takes off anything except masks and gloves until it’s all done.

The recruits have occasionally practiced throws with swords in full gear, which basically involves tackling your opponent and freedom of movement has never seemed to be an issue. (I’ve done it too, it’s fun. Just don’t land on your sword. That hurts, even the flat edge of a nylon blade.)

Nice. I figured the medieval swords were at least the late middle ages.

Yep, longswords were late in the middle ages, as are most of the manuals we have on sword-fighting.

Just the other day someone tried to explain to me how crusaders started using maces because it took too long to draw their longswords and they’d get stabbed before that.

Incidentally the same person who told me they stopped wearing plate armor during the crusades because too many people died of heatstroke. And who said knights wore daggers in their boots and just stood on one leg to reach it.

No, none of this was a joke. He was dead-seriously trying to explain it to me and disagreed with me when I politely put in that neither plate armor nor longswords existed during the crusades and that taking too long to draw a sword has nothing to do with the length of a sword and standing on one leg during a fight is a very bad idea. At that point I just smiled and agreed.

    That’s a sound question. I’m sure it’s not personal.

Admittedly most of those friends are writers who are notorious for their somewhat violent and dark sense of humor so that plays a role XD

With all the strange techniques he was using, I figured as much.

They were actually all well-executed techniques, and what’s worse I learned most of them. They just fled my brain leaving nothing except “Hit with sword”

Shoving is always a most useful tactic. Not that I’ve ever shoved anyone of course.

    Oh I know you haven’t. You’re very chivalrous. 🙃

I love it so much. I knew that had to be it. Taunting is the same way everywhere.

Ngl, I kind of deserved it and it definitely gave me a laugh XD

    Oh, it was wonderful.

Knew you’d enjoy my humiliation 😀
