Yeah, sometimes I wonder ‘Noah, why don’t you just write a nice YA trilogy where the novels are a simple 100k’. xD
Honestly I wonder why I didn’t just write a standalone as my first project XD At least I’m practicing determination XD
What material are the swords made of?
So, the longsword videos you saw were wasters, which are made of stiff nylon.
However, some of the others were using feders, which are made of steel. However, you aren’t allowed to spar with those unless you have full protective gear, including a chest protector, gambeson, and mask protector.
As you can see, in both videos at least one person was just fighting in a shirt, and if you were to get hit with a steel sword, cracking a rib is a possibility, besides getting bruised very badly.
Someone even suggested to me as a joke,
“Why don’t you just fight with steel?”
Me: “I don’t have a death wish, thanks.”
“Nah, they’re scared of you.”
(This was after that second fight, it was an obvious joke XD)
Same goes for the dussacks, they’re made of steel covered in leather, so though they look harmless it’s really painful to get hit with them.
What styles and periods are you trying to replicate (there were cutlass type swords in one of the vids)?
The longswords are according to the style of Ringeck and Lichtenauer, in the fifteenth century.
The other swords are called dussacks, they’re training weapons historically used to train for one-handed one-edged weapons. However, sharp steel versions were also a viable sidearm in the 16th and 17th century. This was in the style of Meyer, who also wrote on the longsword.
They’re extracurricular though, and mostly for the higher level students, so I’ve never used them. I want to at least slightly get the hang of one weapon first XD
Okay, so first off, that stab you took was brutal. Would it be insensitive of me to say it was quite fun to watch?
I’ve shown the video to a few of my friends and they all enjoyed watching me get stabbed in the throat a little too much. Should I be concerned? But honestly even I find it hilarious to watch XD
But what topped even that was when he decapitated you 2:44. That fellow was all in. xD
About halfway through he realized I was no competition and just started practicing techniques on me XD He even told me afterward “Maybe I shouldn’t have shoved you after that one”. (Not an apology, mind you, just an observation XD)
I don’t know how clear it was in the video but besides hitting me in the neck he then stepped forward and shoved me backward. It was impressive and effective but I hadn’t seen it coming in any way XD
He might have been adjusting his neck, but at 1:24 in your fight when he has his sword pointed down and you kinda stop for a moment, he tilts his head to the left and right almost like he was taunting you to attack. I might have misconstrued the gesture, but I still thought it was hilarious. xD
He was absolutely taunting me. XD The gesture was very much a “Well, aren’t you going to do something about it?” He even told me afterward “Next time someone drops their sword like that they’re being stupid and you have to stab them in the chest, alright?”
And you’ll notice after that point he does similar things several more times, like the feign at 2:40 which was purely to confuse me and fighting one-handed or with lowered sword several times after that.
With any other opponent that would have been vastly overconfident and even completely reckless since he was literally just doing it to show off and subtly make fun of me XD It was very in character XD
It makes it hilarious to watch back afterward, and he was very fair about the whole fight. Both times when I hit him and the judges weren’t sure he pointed it out to them and made sure I got points even if it wasn’t certain.
I’ve trained with him some before, mostly in unarmed combat. He’s very hard to fight since he’s really competitive and also much better than I am, but he’ll always fight fair and explain how you should do better. All in all, I really enjoyed the fight and learned a lot, even if it wasn’t great for my ego XD
Also I’m glad you enjoyed watching me metaphorically (and almost literally) fall on my face XD
